Fans lose themselves over Eminem's surprise Oscars performance

Fans have gone into meltdown online after a surprise performance by Eminem at the 2020 Oscars.

Eminem performed ‘Lose Yourself’ in front of a part-shocked, part-thrilled audience at the 92nd Academy Awards show, a song which saw him win his own Academy Award 17 years earlier.

Marshall Mathers took to Twitter to thank the Academy for letting him perform the famous track from the movie 8 Mile, especially after he couldn’t make it to the 2003 ceremony where he received his award.

He won the Oscar for Best Original Song and became the first-ever hip-hop artist to win in that category.

“Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity… Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here,” he wrote.

Fans took to Twitter to share their excitement and shock at the unexpected performance, with many even admitting they hardly recognised the rapper.

“I almost didn’t recognise Eminem,” was one person’s response.

His appearance at the awards show was a tightly kept secret.

According to Variety, the Dolby Theater was put on lockdown during rehearsals, and if news of the appearance leaked to the media, he had the option to cancel.

Plenty have even gone so far as to dub it the “best moment of the Oscars”.

A few were less than impressed, including a couple of the celebrities watching on in the audience.

But that didn’t stop the rapper from getting a standing ovation from most of the crowd at the end.
