This Year’s Oscar Nominations Have Been Postponed Due to the L.A. Wildfires

The Southern California wildfires have Hollywood putting their annual award season on hold.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has given its 10,000 members an extension to submit their 2025 Oscar nominees due to the fires ravaging Los Angeles, Variety reported. The original voting window, which opened on January 8, was supposed to close on January 12. However, the deadline has now been pushed two days to January 14. In addition, the Academy is postponing the actual announcement of the 97th annual Oscar nominees to January 19.

“We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California,” an email sent to Academy members read. “So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”

This year’s Oscars are scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre with Conan O’Brien set to host for the first time. As of now, the award show is still expected to go on as planned. However, Hollywood has already rescheduled the Critics Choice Awards and canceled several premieres.

Jean Smart, the Golden Globe-winning actress from Hacks, took to social media on Wednesday night to put out a message to TV networks. In the post, she asked the networks to consider not televising any upcoming award ceremonies and instead donate the money they would have brought in to support victims affected by the fast-growing fires. As of Wednesday, Hacks was ordered to shut down its production in Los Angeles among other TV shows including Loot and Suits: LA, Variety reported.

“ATTENTION! With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks television the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to the victims of the fires and the firefighters,” Smart wrote on Instagram.

Since the start of this week, several blazes have broken out across Los Angeles, the largest tearing through the affluent Pacific Palisades enclave where thousands have reportedly lost their home—including A-listers such as Billy Crystal, Mandy Moore, and Paris Hilton. The grounds on the famous Getty Villa, one of the venues of the Getty Museum, even caught fire. Thankfully, the museum and its staff were not harmed.
