Coca-Cola and Oreo team up on new soda and cookie flavors

Coca-Cola and Oreo joined forces for an unexpectedly delicious collaboration.

The brands created two limited-time products: Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar soda and Oreo Coca-Cola cookies.

The dessert and drink items, both of which are available starting on Sept. 9, come in special packaging with a sleek, black background. They are decorated with images of Oreos stacked in an arrangement that resembles the silhouette of a classic Coca-Cola glass bottle. But what's inside each package is what really shines.

Oreo Coca-Cola sandwich cookies are made of two different cookies. One cookie looks like the classic chocolate Oreo cookie but has a pop of soda flavor from Coca-Cola syrup. The other half of the sandwich is a red-colored golden Oreo cookie with the “Coca-Cola” logo and bubble designs. A classic cream layer and popping candies that are meant to replicate the fizziness of sipping soda are sandwiched between the black and red cookies.

The specifics of the limited-edition soda are a little more vague. According to a press release, Coca-Cola Oreo Zero Sugar is meant to combine a “smooth fusion of a refreshing Coca-Cola taste with flavorful hints inspired by Oreo cookies.”

PEOPLE got to see how cookie-like the soda is and how soda-like the cookies are — and we were all pleasantly surprised.

Our testers could immediately smell the Oreo influence when popping open the soda can. The chocolate cookie scent was stronger than the actual flavor of the cola, but testers still described the drink as a "chocolate cream soda." Soda purists were happy with the subtlety of the flavor, but some reviewers were hoping for more of an Oreo punch.

Testers were mesmerized at just the appearance of the Oreo Coca-Cola cookies. Like the soda, the scent of the cookies was stronger than the actual flavor. But, the hint of cola in the chocolate cookie combined with the popping candies in the vanilla cream did make for an effervescent bite.

Soda and snack fanatics who can’t wait until Sept. 9 can sign up for a presale on Walmart’s website later in August — or on Oreo’s website to stay informed about the cookies.

Oreo previously released a limited-time Cherry Cola flavor back in 2017 but this is the snack brand’s first official partnership with Coca-Cola.

Mint Chip Oreos were released in July

In July, the cookie brand released a seasonally appropriate flavor: Mint Chip.

The ice cream-inspired sandwiches combine two classic chocolate cookies with a waffle cone embossment, mint chip-flavored cream and little chocolate chips. They were first available on July 8 and can still be found in retailers nationwide.

It’s food collaboration galore at grocery stores. Thomas’ Froot Loops Mini Bagels hit shelves just in time for back-to-school season. The colorfully speckled fruit-flavored bagels, which are about half the size of traditional bagels, have bits of the Kellogg’s cereal in each bite.

The mashup items are sold in 10-packs for $5.50 and are available through Oct. 10.
