Nurse with coronavirus dies 24 hours after being given all-clear

A nurse in Argentina has passed away just 24 hours after she was discharged from hospital and given the all-clear from coronavirus.

The 43-year-old health worker named Maria Mariangeli had been hospitalised in a serious condition in the city of Mar de Plata, in the northeastern Argentine province of Buenos Aires.

The nurse tested positive for COVID some weeks ago and was being treated in an intensive care unit with a ventilator after suffering complications.

She was allowed to go home on Monday after testing negative for the virus and coming off the ventilator.

However, just 24 hours later she began to suffer breathing problems and her husband rushed her to a nearby clinic, the Belgrano sanatorium.

The nurse was admitted into intensive care and doctors reportedly tried to resuscitate her, but she died during the attempts.

According to sources at the clinic, doctors have not ruled out that the cause of death was massive pulmonary thromboembolism.

The cause of death was not coronavirus, according to national newspaper Infobae.

"It is a picture that occurs in critically ill patients, a frequent cause of death in patients who have been in a critical situation,” medical sources from the clinic told the press.

"It is a diagnosis [massive pulmonary thromboembolism] of strong suspicion, but the cause is far from coronavirus.”

A “round of applause” was held on social networks to honour the nurse.
