This Nostalgic Color Is Making a Major Comeback in 2025

When the big-name paint brands announced their 2025 Color(s) of the Year at the end of 2024, I was happy to report just how varied they were. No signs of beige or greige in any of the announcements! Instead, we got rich purples, poppy blues, and deep cherry reds. As a certified color obsessive and Country Living's Senior Homes + Style Editor, I spend most of my days tracking what colors people are gravitating toward in and around their homes, so I was pleasantly surprised to see an oft-looked over shade suddenly making waves, or should I say whey-ves, the last few weeks. Fresh off KitchenAid's recent announcement that their color of the year is none other than Butter, I can declare that it's finally time for this sunny shade to get its due. Though I didn't initially anticipate it as a shade to watch in 2025, it's clear that butter yellow is now poised to become an internet favorite. (Don't believe me? The viral reveal video of KitchenAid's newest mixer has over 20 million views on TikTok alone.)
Charmingly bold yet totally livable, butter yellow is a color-lover's neutral. And, the psychology behind its popularity makes a lot of sense. "Yellow has the ability to transport you back in time, evoking some of the warmest memories," says Brittni Pertijs, the design manager of color, material, and finish at KitchenAid's parent company, Whirlpool. In today's uncertain times, it seems people are gravitating to the joy and comfort yellow offers.
While striking paint shades are nothing new, they have taken on a new life in the last few years thanks to the increasing popularity of maximalism and dopamine decorating. Gone are the days of millennial gray or the domination of what the internet has dubbed "sad beige." Uniformity is no longer seen as the ultimate signifier of taste, thanks to this reemergence and exhalation of exuberant, personalized style. In layman's terms: The weirder and more original your decor or paint choices, the cooler they are. Pinterest identified this trend earlier this year in the 2025 trend report, noting that Gen Z and Gen X are likely to spend this year personalizing their spaces with handmade touches.
So, whether you're ready to go all-in on some tried, true, and designer-approved yellows or strike out on your own to find your perfect shade of butter, it's time to start embracing the sunnier side of the paint deck.
