Normani and DK Metcalf's Relationship: All About the Singer and NFL Player's Romance
The ‘Motivation’ singer and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver stepped out publicly for the first time at Tyler Lockett’s wedding in 2023
Normani is more than motivation to DeKaylin “DK” Metcalf.
The “Wild Side” singer confirmed her relationship with the Seattle Seahawks wide receiver on Instagram in July 2023 after they stepped out publicly for the first time to celebrate fellow Seahawks player Tyler Lockett's wedding.
Normani and Metcalf were first introduced by Ciara and Russell Wilson, who formerly played alongside Metcalf before switching teams. In a June 2024 Apple Music interview with Ebro, Normani said Ciara had been trying to set them up for a while before they met one night at one of her parties.
“We actually met through Ciara and Russ,” Normani revealed. “It’s like, if you could trust a couple [to set you up], that would be the couple.”
Ahead of the release of her debut album Dopamine, Normani told Rolling Stone in June 2024 that she was “very happy” in her relationship. She admitted Metcalf was “definitely an answered prayer” after the former Dancing with the Stars finalist navigated personal struggles, including her mother and father’s cancer diagnoses.
“I’ve experienced a lot with relationships,” she continued. “I’m a real lover girl...I like to see myself happy. I really do.”
From how Ciara and Russell Wilson set them up to which track on Dopamine was inspired by Metcalf, here’s everything to know about Normani and DK Metcalf’s relationship.
They were spotted together in 2022 but confirmed their relationship in 2023
Rumors surrounding the couple’s relationship began when they were spotted at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, Calif., in June 2022. However, the “Motivation” performer didn't officially confirm their relationship until a year later, in July 2023, with a picture of Metcalf kissing her on the cheek on her Instagram Stories.
The photo was snapped at Seahawks wide receiver Lockett’s wedding to Lauren Lockett. Metcalf’s former teammate, Russell, further confirmed they were together by posting a video of them dancing together on his Instagram Stories.
Ciara and Russell Wilson set them up
The former Fifth Harmony member didn’t meet Metcalf by chance. In fact, “Goodies” singer Ciara and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell introduced her to her current boyfriend.
In her interview with Ebro, she recalled how Ciara called her while she was at another event and insisted that she come to a party the singer was hosting for an alcohol brand she was launching.
“She was really adamant about coming [to the party],” Normani said. “I just knew it was something else because she was very adamant, and when I was on the way, she was like, ‘Oh yeah, your boy’s gonna be there.’ ”
Instead of warning either of them, Normani said Ciara and Russell “did the same to [Metcalf]” and scheduled their blind meetup. “They was playing cupid, but it worked,” she added.
The singer admittedly was “in a whole different situation” as she formerly dated dancer Rameer Colon. However, Ciara still held out hope for Normani’s potential future with Metcalf. “She was serious. [On] multiple occasions, she was like, ‘Hey, but this guy though!’ ” she added.
Normani is thankful for their relationship
After being together for over two years, Normani is grateful for her relationship with Metcalf. She gushed about her beau in an interview with Rolling Stone, highlighting that it felt good to be a “lover girl” full of joy with her partner.
“I am very happy,” Normani said. “I wear my heart on my sleeve, and finding space where that’s reciprocated feels good.”
“He’s a blessing. He’s such a light for me, especially just like in my lowest points,” she told Ebro the same month.
Metcalf inspired her song “Lights On”
Normani’s debut album Dopamine was highly anticipated ahead of its June 2024 release. Despite being in the spotlight for years as part of Fifth Harmony and embarking on her solo career, she wanted to be “intentional” with the project, she told Rolling Stone. When she was working on the album, her mother and father were diagnosed with cancer, which she said stumped her creativity.
“I’m a human being, and the pain that I experience takes away from me being able to be creative and having the motivation to get up and be productive,” Normani said. “That was something that I really struggled with. I’ve definitely been tested throughout this process, but there’s a beautiful side to it, too. I’ve given up a lot to be in the position I’m in.”
She credited Metcalf with boosting her artistry while working on Dopamine, adding that he “inspired a few [songs on the album].” Normani revealed on The Terrell Show in June 2024 that the NFL player was “hype” when he learned “Lights On” was written about him.
"Definitely like trying to keep that sensual, sexy, airiness to it, I would say, is a challenge," she said. “I wanted it to be focused on the feeling, and I wanted it to feel like he was in the room with me with the lights on. I wanted that intimacy."
After the album's June 14 release, Normani revealed on the Zach Sang Show that Metcalf’s favorite track on her first solo record was “Take My Time."
Normani and Metcalf are playful with each other
In a May 2024 interview with Elle, Normani showed her playful side when she prank-called Metcalf and began reciting the lyrics to her track, "Wild Side," telling him, “I’m ready to pull up on you / I’m ready to do what I do.”
He was caught off guard by her call, and called Normani by her middle name when asking, “Kordei, what you talking about?” Metcalf added, “Come on, say it to me again,” before she divulged she was playing a joke on him.
Normani is supportive of his career
With public careers in the music and sports industries, Normani and Metcalf have been vocal in their support of one another.
While she wasn't physically present, the singer was rooting for her partner during his November 2023 game against the Dallas Cowboys when she reposted a clip of his 73-yard touchdown on her Instagram Stories.
“Yahhhhhhhhhhhh,” she wrote over the video.
