Sylvia Jeffreys' fate at Today still a mystery
It’s been quite a week for Channel Nine after Karl Stefanovic’s axing from Today and brother Peter’s departure from the network was announced.
Following rumours Sylvia Jeffreys could be redeployed within the company, Nine has insisted she’s staying with the channel, though avoided addressing whether she will actually stay with the breakfast TV show.
“Sylvia Jeffreys is a huge part of Nine’s plans for 2019 and beyond,” Nine’s Director of News and Current Affairs, Darren Wick.
“She is contracted with Nine until the end of 2020. Any reports or speculation that she is leaving Nine are incorrect. She is a gifted, hard-working journalist and presenter and we look forward to continuing to work with her.”
Earlier this week entertainment commentator Peter Ford has suggested the 32-year-old will be replaced by Nine News Perth presenter Tracy Vo while Sylvia will be ‘redeployed’ to another role.
“As I reported yesterday there is also a plan to also ‘redeploy’ @SylviaJeffreys and @Tracy_Vo is favourite to move east,” Ford tweeted on Tuesday evening after Peter’s departure was confirmed.
Sylvia has been working for Channel Nine since 2005 in various presenting roles, most recently as newsreader for Today, hosted by her brother-in-law Karl Stefanovic and Georgie Gardner.
Meanwhile Tracy, 35, has been with the network since 2007, currently part of the Perth news team.
On Tuesday it was confirmed Sylvia’s husband Peter was leaving Channel Nine after 15 years with the network.
He was most recently fronting Weekend Today and some 60 Minutes segments.
Then on Wednesday it was announced Karl Stefanovic wouldn’t be hosting Today in 2019.
“Nine and Karl Stefanovic have agreed it is time for him to step off the Today Show,” news and current affairs director Darren Wick said in a statement. “Karl remains on contract with the network and will continue to host This Time Next Year which records in February.
