Nicole Kidman spills on ‘ridiculous’ photo shoot: 'What was I thinking?'

Nicole Kidman left fans shocked earlier this year after the release of a Vanity Fair cover that had fans questioning why she was "dressed like a schoolgirl?"

Now, the 54-year-old actress has broken her silence on the controversial cover shoot for the Hollywood issue, which usually sees stars dressed in their red carpet best, with Nicole instead wearing a tiny Miu Miu skirt and matching crop top.

Fans were less than impressed with the shoot, with one person saying: “She’s an accomplished actress who’s nominated for an Oscar. Why is she dressed like a schoolgirl? Not cool.”

“Would love to hear the concept behind this…cause I don’t get it,” another said.

“One of the most prolific actresses (and also most beautiful) and she is presented as skimpy dressed school girl. In 2022. Who thought this was a good idea? The mind boggles,” a commenter wrote.

“Nicole Kidman is incredible but this styling is terrible. I’m shocked she agreed to this,” another said.

Many others also hit out at Vanity Fair for heavily editing the photo.

Now, in a conversation with her Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann director for Vogue Australia, the actress has revealed what really happened behind-the-scenes of the interview.

It turns out, the outfit was all Nicole and she actually "begged" Vanity Fair's stylist Katie Grand to wear it instead of another outfit that had been chosen for her.

"I was like, 'No, no, I like this one! Am I allowed to wear that?'" she explained, revealing the stylist actually thought she was joking.

"Katie was like, 'You’re willing to wear that?!' And I said, 'Wear it?! I’m begging you to wear it!'"

Baz shared that he thought the outfit looked amazing, "I just went like, 'Ah, she’s always got it! She can always turn it on!'"

However, after wrapping the shoot, Nicole had some second thoughts, "I did walk away thinking, 'What was I thinking?! That was ridiculous! What were you doing, Nicole?!' And then I went, 'Eh, oh well!'"

She added that sometimes when you try something different it'll work and other times it won't, but she loves the idea of "being bold and not fitting into a box".
