Nicole Kidman Praises Costars on “The Perfect Couple”: ‘I Love Working in an Ensemble’
Kidman stars in the Netflix adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel alongside Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson and Dakota Fanning
Nicole Kidman is celebrating her Perfect Couple castmates!
The actress and producer, 57, discussed her time on the new Netflix hit on the Sept. 11 episode of author Elin Hilderbrand and Tim Ehrenberg’s podcast Books, Beach, and Beyond.
The Perfect Couple is adapted from Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel of the same name, and Kidman said that working with castmates Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning and Eve Hewson to bring the book to life was a great experience.
“I love working in an ensemble because you have so many different characters on set and watching everybody and getting to know everyone,” Kidman said. “I just spoke to Dakota the other day going, ‘You're so good at this.’ And Liev, but also Eve is just such a delight ... I think she's just so intoxicating.”
“You're all working together as an acting troupe,” she added. “And that's the thing I love most.”
Kidman plays Greer Garrison Winbury, a novelist married to Tag Winbury, played by Schreiber. As the couple prepare for their son’s wedding on Nantucket, a body washes up on the shore and upends the big day as it turns into a murder investigation.

Kidman is no stranger to playing literary figures onscreen. The actress portrayed Celeste Wright in the HBO adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel Big Little Lies, and author Virginia Woolf in the acclaimed 2002 film The Hours, based off of Michael Cunningham’s 1999 novel. Playing Greer in The Perfect Couple, she says, was an opportunity to show off her humorous side, as well.

“I love the wit. She's funny,” Kidman said. “And a lot of times, I don't get the chance to do that. And that was a huge draw card for me.”
“That was actually what [director] Susanne [Bier] said to me,” Kidman said. “She was like, ‘You could be funny in this. I want you to be funny.’ And then, Liev, who is a very good friend. I was like, ‘Liev, would you be Tag? And there's something about Liev where he came in and created Tag a particular way that is fantastic on screen. So their marriage is what's so fun.”
Kidman also shared on the podcast that she’s a big reader herself, and recently bought a copy of Judi Dench’s memoir Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent. Kidman also says she enjoys reading at night, though she gravitates towards lighter material during that time.
“I've got to kind of balance with light novels so that I'm not sort of disturbed before I go to sleep,” she said. “But I do read before I go to sleep, a lot of times. It's a really good way for me to wind down. And then if I wake up at 3 a.m., I am one of those people that has a reading light and pops it on, and I read.”

Kidman says her reading light, which was a gift, is also perfect when it comes to not disturbing her husband, country singer Keith Urban.
“It's fabulous because it doesn't wake up Keith,” she jokes. “And so I'm not putting the big light on.
