Is Nicole Kidman’s Kinky Erotic Thriller ‘Babygirl’ a Christmas Movie? ‘Let’s Hope So,’ She Says
Nicole Kidman’s new erotic thriller “Babygirl” not only features holiday scenes, but A24 is releasing the movie on Dec. 25. So does this make the R-rated film a Christmas movie?
“Let’s hope so,” Kidman, who plays a tech company CEO having a kink-filled affair with an intern (Harris Dickinson), told me with a laugh at the film’s premiere Wednesday in Los Angeles. “Somebody thinks it is… A24 is very subversive. They seem to go against the grain always, so maybe [Christmas] is the right time.”

Dickinson weighed in, “It’s absolutely a Christmas movie. I didn’t know it was going to be, but it turned out to be so I’m going with it.”
Halina Reijn, who wrote and directed the movie, said “definitely, as far as I’m concerned.”
“It has Christmas trees, it has Christmas songs. Of course, you can’t take everybody to this movie, but you can definitely go with your friends or with your partner and have an amazing time,” she said. “We’ve had screenings where couples were saying, ‘We’re going home,’ because they were inspired.”
She continued, “In the end, the sexuality is a metaphor for maybe trying to find your authentic self and not being scared of that, which is so hard to do. I’m also really writing this movie as a letter to myself to really say to myself — even coming here today, I’m like, ‘What are people gonna think of my dress? Am I thin enough? Am I beautiful enough? Am I normal enough to please everyone?’ I think that’s just wrong. We should just be our unique selves. But it’s easier said than done.”
While Reijn has no plans for a “Babygirl” sequel, she says she has many more ideas for movies dealing with “sexual desire, shame, trying to be true to the beast inside of you and being more at ease with darkness.”
