Kidman’s milk moment referenced a scene in Babygirl when her character Romy, a CEO and “perfect” wife and mother, accepts a tall glass of milk from Samuel (played by Harris Dickinson), the intern she is beginning to have a torrid affair with, as she sits at a bar with friends and coworkers.

Startled at first by the glass’ arrival, Romy then drinks every last drop of the milk, while making direct eye contact with the much younger man, who is gathered with friends of his own across the room.

The pair exchange intense looks as she finishes the beverage and wipes her mouth.

According to Babygirl’s director, writer and co-producer Halina Reijn, the scene was inspired by an actual event in her life.

It happened to me,” Reijn, 49, recently told IndieWire.

Reijn, who is also an actress, recalled a time when she’d just finished a production and wanted to celebrate but all of her friends were being “boring,” so she went out alone.

“I went to a bar, and I ordered something boring like a Diet Coke because I didn’t drink at that time because I was a control freak. There was this young Belgian actor — I can’t say who it is — but he was famous. I knew of him. I’d never spoken to him. He was at least 15 years younger than I, and he ordered me a glass of milk,” she said in the Dec. 28 interview.

“I thought it was an incredible, hot thing to do, and so courageous, and so I wanted to reward him by drinking the whole thing, and I did. It did make me a little nauseated, to be honest with you, because it was cow milk. It was back in the day,” Reijn added, calling it “one of the most arousing moments of my life.”

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 2024 Gotham Awards on Dec. 2, Kidman said Babygirl viewers might want to watch the film “alone.”

Babygirl is now in theaters.
