Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren Belt from Broadway's “The Last Five Years” in First Listen at Upcoming Revival (Exclusive)

Preview performances for the highly anticipated production begin in New York City on March 18

Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren are inching closer to Broadway in the highly anticipated revival of The Last Five Years, and PEOPLE has a first listen at the pair singing two of the musical's most popular tunes.

In an exclusive video released by the show's production on Wednesday, Jan. 22, fans can see the two actors recording studio versions of "I Can Do Better Than That" and "Moving Too Fast" from three-time Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown's beloved score.

Both sound incredible in the clip, as they show off their vocal takes on the tunes.

The Last Five Years follows the demise of a relationship between a rising novelist named Jamie (Jonas) and a struggling actress named Cathy (Warren), across two different timelines. His perspective is told in chronological order from when the couple first got together, while hers is told in reverse from the end of their marriage.

Not only will The Last Five Years mark a return to the boards for both Jonas, 31, and Warren, 37 — he, last in 2012's How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and she, a 2021 Tony Award winner for her portrayal of Tina Turner in Tina, the musical based on the music icon's life — it will also mark the first time The Last Five Years has ever been on Broadway.

Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by Brown, the two-hander first premiered at Chicago's Northlight Theatre in 2001. A year later, a New York City production starring Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott premiered Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theater.

That cast recording helped The Last Five Years become a favorite among the musical theater industry, with songs from the show — including "Nobody Needs to Know," "Still Hurting," "If I Didn't Believe in You" and "The Next Ten Minutes" — becoming musical theatre staples over the years.

An Off-Broadway revival at New York City's Second Stage Theater came in 2013, with Adam Kantor and Betsy Wolfe in the roles of Jamie and Cathy. Two years later, a movie adaptation was released starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick .

In 2016, a one-night-only concert of the musical was staged at New York City's Town Hall led by Joshua Henry and Cynthia Erivo. That same year, a production of The Last Five Years opened in London led by Bridgerton and Wicked Jonathan Bailey and Samantha Barks, a breakout of the 2012 Les Misérables film.

But the the time is right for Broadway. In fact, when the production was first announced back in June, it came almost exactly 25 years to the date after Brown wrote the first song for The Last Five Years (June 15, 1999).

"I have always believed that when the time was right, The Last Five Years would make its way to Broadway," Brown said in a statement at the time. "To have Nick and Adrienne taking on these roles is a composer’s dream come true, and to have Whitney’s extraordinary guidance and vision is the hope of every playwright. It has taken twenty-five years, but the time is right.”

Tickets to The Last Five Years are now on sale.
