Newfoundland Steals the Spotlight at Dog Park Like a True Mayor

Dogs are naturally social animals. Most enjoy daily walks to see what’s happening in the neighborhood and love having playdates with other pups. However, some have different ideas about what constitutes fun.

This beautiful Newfoundland may be a social butterfly, but she’s not interested in playing with dogs. Nevertheless, she still enjoys getting attention.

Watch this video from August 7 to see how she prefers to spend her day at the park.

What a charming girl! Sweet Emmy (@emmy_the_newf) appears to have fun even if she isn’t interested in playing. This social girl would much prefer to get attention from the other humans passing by. Perhaps she knows it can help relax people to pet a big fluffy dog, and it’s her mission to elevate the mood of those around her. Whatever her reason, she looks like the mayor greeting everyone and checking things out. And even though she doesn’t want to play, she’s also incredibly well-mannered when the other dogs try to convince her otherwise. What a good girl she is!

Why Do Some Dogs Prefer People Over Pups?

Some dogs have been bred to have a strong connection with their human companions, while others may feel intimidated in dog parks or may not have found other dogs with a similar play style. For example, my father had a large Rottweiler who was well-trained and socialized but wasn’t interested in playing with strangers. At puppy socials, he would greet other humans or lie quietly alone, observing the activity. However, he would play endlessly at home with my Rottweiler or French bulldog. Just like humans, dogs have unique personalities, and we need to respect their individual preferences.

People were understanding of this Newfoundland’s priorities. Viewer @deborahcharete responded, “She is likely making people happy as much as they make her happy.” Dogs seem to understand their power, so that might be her intention. Viewer @selenalwt remarked, “If I ever ran into Emmy at a dog park, I’d be the one following her around to give her all the pets!” I would, too. Viewer @mellybeesalchemy pointed out, “She has like pet-dar. She hones in on who the petters are, lol.” That she does! While some people pointed out that strangers were ignoring her in the park, it may be their dogs who would get jealous of her receiving their attention.

If I were in Chicago, I would visit the dog park to give beautiful Emmy a few pets. Whether you live there or are traveling without your animals, it’s a great way to get your daily dose of big dog love.
