Notorious ladies-man John Mayer says he wishes the media would focus on his music rather than his relationships.

The 37-year-old 'Your Body is a Wonderland' singer touched on ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift five years after their breakup during a recent MSNBC interview.

"We have to be able to talk about Taylor Swift professionally," John told Ronan Farrow.

The bad-boy singer, who is now dating Katy Perry, went on to praise the 25-year-old 'Blank Space' artist for banning her music on Spotify, saying he thinks it's "really cool".

"Artists need the person with the loudest voice to speak for them. You can go to the Met Ball. That’s great. That’s a great way to use your voice is to go ‘I’m wearing Valentino.’ Or you can use your voice to give things," he explained.

The Grammy performer also admitted he knows he will never have the same star status as Taylor, but says he's "fine with it".

"Nothing bothers me anymore. There are going to be times when I make music as popular or empirically valuable as [Swift’s] in terms of making pop music that won’t sell as many copies and I’m fine with that. Look, if I save a baby from a burning building and Kanye [West] saves a baby from a burning building, Kanye’s going to get more Google News hits. And I’m fine with it," John said.

Despite commenting on his short-lived romance with Taylor, the singer wishes people would focus on his music rather than who he's dating.

"She's an artist. I'm an artist. Let's just...everybody stop. Nobody's got an incurable cancer. We're rich people who get to live out our dreams. Let's just stop it," he said.

"I'm a musician who's bigger than one song or one record. It's really about the longevity of all the work that goes together, and I'm just not interested in the things that won't last forever."
