Netflix's Territory cast hit back at Yellowstone comparisons: 'Unapologetically Australian'
EXCLUSIVE: The cast of Netflix's new Aussie hit show Territory reveal what they really think about the comparisons to Yellowstone.
Aussie TV viewers are very lucky right now – there has never been a better time in Australian TV, thanks to all the streamers making some incredible content. And Netflix is onto a serious winner with its new show Territory, which is available to stream right now.
Territory tells the story of the Lawson cattle station, the biggest in the world, which is left without a successor. Generational clashes threaten to tear the Lawson family apart. Sensing this once great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions – rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, Indigenous elders and billionaire miners – move in for the kill.
Netflix viewers react to Territory: 'Rip-off of Yellowstone'
For those who haven't watched the show just yet, you may have noticed some comparisons to shows like Yellowstone and Succession, and I'll admit, I made those comparisons as well (despite never actually having watched Yellowstone, that is)! But the show is so, so good, and, to me, it stands on its own feet, separate from Yellowstone, but some fans aren't so sure.
"What a joke... this is a complete rip-off of Yellowstone," one Instagram user said.
"When Australians try to copy Yellowstone," another wrote, while one particularly cruel person described it as the "Temu Yellowstone".
"This show will never be as good as Yellowstone," someone else said.
"No where near as good as Yellowstone," yet another non-believer added.

Many others defended the show, with one saying, "Not at all," and another adding, "Not in the slightest."
Most shared their love of the show, with one person saying, "What a show, got me hooked!"
"Absolutely brilliant Aussie cast and wonderful story... shame it ended so quick," another added.
"Loved every minute," a third fan said.
"Beautifully shot, the scenery is stunning," yet another added.
"Can't wait for season 2," one said, and they weren't alone, with many others begging for a follow-up, "Season two and MORE episodes, please," another said.
One American joked that they needed subtitles to understand it but loved it, "I'm loving it. It's #3 on Netflix already here in the US. I gotta use [closed captioning] to get all the dialogue, but it's sure a great watch."
Territory stars respond to Yellowstone comparisons
So, does the Territory cast agree with the Yellowstone comparisons? Sam Corlett (Marshall Lawson), Philippa Northeast (Susie Lawson), Sam Delich (Rich Petrakis) and Kylah Day (Sharnie Kennedy) told Yahoo Lifestyle their thoughts on the matter.
"The more the merrier!" Sam Delich tells us. "I think, like any cop show in the world is gonna get comparisons to other things – I love Yellowstone, and I think Taylor Sheridan's universe is great, but I think it's so different. In the sense of Montana and the Northern Territory could not be further apart.
"I think there are similar themes, of course, but overall I think fans of Yellowstone will love Territory, but I just think it's its own entity."
Kylah says she has her "fingers crossed" that fans of Yellowstone will embrace their show, adding, "I think [the fans] are very passionate about Yellowstone, so it'll be interesting to see how they perceive Territory. I haven't seen Yellowstone, so I don't really know the comparisons."
"I've seen 'em all, I love Yellowstone," Sam says with a smile. "Absolutely shamelessly."
However, Sam adds that it wasn't the Yellowstone comparison that made him want to be part of the show.
"When I saw the script, I was like 10 out of 10, absolutely, I want to take on this part," he says. "It definitely wasn't the Yellowstone feeling that made me want to do it. It was kind of like just all the themes, all the darkness and the juice."
Sam Corlett says it's an 'honour' to have the Yellowstone comparisons
Sam Corlett admits that while he hasn't much of Yellowstone, it's an "honour" to have Territory being compared to it.
"I haven't seen too much of Yellowstone," he says. "Obviously, it's had such a profound impact on culture over there and here. I suppose it's an honour to be compared, but what I know is that this is so unapologetically Australian that I don't see it being anything like anything that has ever been on screen."

Philippa says that she doesn't really see the comparisons, saying, "Our cattle industry in Australia is so different to the industry over in America, and we wholeheartedly, in detail, go into it. So I think, it doesn't really have a comparison in that sense."
Territory is available to stream on Netflix now.
