More from Variety
“‘Nemesis’ is the story of two men on either side of the law, the tale of what happens when an unstoppable force (an expert criminal) meets an immovable object (a brilliant police detective). What starts as a series that aims to subvert the heist genre at every turn, amped with thrilling life-or-death stakes, family dynamics and explosive action, actually gives birth to an exploration of what drives us, sustains us, and ultimately destroys us.”
“Tani and I are excited to bring a hard-hitting psychological crime drama to Netflix, specific in location, but broad in universal themes of right and wrong, love and loss, and loyalty vs self-preservation,” Kemp said. “We are grateful to Bela, Peter, Jinny and Nne for their support, keeping this production in Los Angeles and getting local crews back to work.”
In addition, the series has added seven series regulars to its cast. They are: Matthew Law (“Abbott Elementary,” “Ahsoka”) as Isaiah Stiles, Y’lan Noel (“Lady in the Lake,” “Insecure”) as Coltrane Wilder, Cleopatra Coleman (“Black Rabbit,” “Clipped”) as Ebony Wilder, Tre Hale (“All-American,” “Platonic”) as Darren “Stro” Stroman, Domenick Lombardozzi (“The Wire,” “Power,” “Tulsa King”) as Dave Cerullo, Jonnie Park (“Quiz Lady,” “Power,” “Raya and the Last Dragon”) as Chris Choi, and Ariana Guerra (“CSI: Vegas,” “Helstrom”) as Yvette Cruz.
Kemp will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series via End of Episode, with Marole also executive producing. Mario Van Peebles will direct episodes one and two and will also executive produce those episodes. Chris Selak of End of Episode will executive produce along with Philipp Barnett.
“Viewers are in for a ride with ‘Nemesis,’ Courtney and Tani’s bold take on the crime drama genre,” said Nne Ebong, vice president of studio scripted series at Netflix. “Courtney’s shows have proven to dominate culture and conversation, and it’s exciting to have this be the first project from our creative partnership.”
“Nemesis” keeps Kemp in the criminal world. She is best known for creating the popular Starz crime drama “Power,” which wrapped up after six seasons in 2020. Three spinoffs have debuted to date, with a prequel series also in the works. Kemp’s other credits include “The Good Wife” and “The Bernie Mac Show.”
Kemp is repped by CAA, Gendler Kelly & Cunningham and 42West. Marole is repped by Del Shaw Moonves. Law is repped by Brecheen, Feldman, Breimer, Silver & Thompson. Noel is repped by Stride Management and Gersh. Coleman is repped by Entertainment 360 and McKuin Frankel Whitehead LLP. Hale is repped by Clear Talent Group, Crimson Media Group, and Hansen Jacobson. Lombardozzi is repped by Gersh and Leverage Management. Park is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham. Guerra is repped by Pakula/King, Gartner Group and Goodman Genow.
