Mustaches, kids, power washers: The men of “New Girl” reveal where their characters are now
Which roommate would have more kids by now? Which would be "bald and unemployed"? Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Damon Wayans Jr. have ideas.
It's been six years since New Girl ended, but in many ways the sitcom feels more popular than ever. The show's simple premise — a bunch of male roommates and one female friend (Zooey Deschanel) share an L.A. loft together — is elevated by the chemistry between its colorful characters: Uptight womanizer Schmidt (Max Greenfield), kooky cat guy Winston (Lamorne Morris), lovable dirtbag Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), and overly energetic personal trainer Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.), in addition to Deschanel's quirky dream girl Jess and Hannah Simone's sarcastic supermodel Cece.
Johnson, Greenfield, Morris, and Wayans just reunited for PEOPLE's annual Sexiest Man Alive issue for the first time since they finished filming the show, and discussed New Girl's continuing popularity that may have been boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic. They also speculated on where their characters might be in the years since we last saw them.

"It’s the perfect binge show," Greenfield said. "Because of Netflix and all these streamers, it’s so easily accessible now that every year there’s new college kids who are spending some weird weekend where they’re like, 'I watched all 130 episodes, and now my life has changed.'"
"They don’t be learning s--- in school," Morris joked.
"I think that continuously is happening every year with a new base of fans," Greenfield added. "And especially during the pandemic when I think people were locked in and they latched onto the show and it's just one of those shows that seems to have taken on a life of its own and I don't think it's going anywhere."

The New Girl actors say they're not identical to the characters they played on the show — except when they're together like this, and they slip back into their old dynamics. They're also in touch enough with Nick, Winston, Schmidt, and Coach to guess what they're up to.
"Winston was a family man," Morris said. "If you watched the last episode, he had a lot of kids, so I think Winston would be just hanging out with the kids."
As for Nick, Johnson put it like this: "Mustache, car dealership. Into sales. Thick mustache. Other than that, same guy."

Wayans doesn't have a high opinion of Coach's current status, which he said would simply be, "bald and unemployed."
"I think Schmidt just invested in a power washer," Greenfield said. "He just got one on his own, and he’s power-washing everything right now: back deck, car. Just most surfaces."
As delightful as the PEOPLE interview is to read, is there a chance of actually seeing Nick, Schmidt, Winston, and Coach together again onscreen? The men say it's up to New Girl creator Liz Meriwether.
"It's so much about Liz Meriwether who created the show and what she would do differently and how she would direct the show and if she would want to do a reunion," Greenfield said. "So I think it's her decision and how she would want to move forward."

Wayans added, "I think Liz is very funny and I think if she did bring it back, it would be great."
"Yeah, she'd have a smart take on it," Johnson said.
