New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week
The month of February is bringing terror and heartbreak with films hoping to capitalize on Valentine’s Day as well as horror fan appetites with new original titles headed into theaters.
This upcoming weekend offers an action comedy starring a recent Oscar winner, a horror mystery featuring a masked killer with red eyes and the current frontrunner to win the Oscar for best documentary feature next month.
More from Variety
“Love Hurts” is led by Ke Huy Quan, who recently won the best supporting actor Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” as a relator who reconnects with his violent past after a former partner-in-crime informs him that his brother is hunting him down. The highly anticipated action film marks Jonathan Eusebio’s directorial debut after years of experience as an assistant director and stunt coordinator on hit films like “John Wick,” “Power Rangers,” “Black Panther” and many more. Ariana DeBose, another recent Oscar winner, rounds out the cast.
“Heart Eyes” is looking to get a head start on Valentine’s Day plans with the violent story of the “Heart Eyes Killer” who targets couples on the famous holiday. The slasher film is directed by Josh Ruben, who had his directorial debut “Scare Me” at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, and stars Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Jordan Brewster and Devon Sawa. Notably, Christopher Landon, who publicly left “Scream VII,” has writing and producing credits on “Heart Eyes,” marking his latest project following “Freaky” and “We Have a Ghost.”
In limited release, independent films with notable names like Mubi’s revenge drama “Bring Them Down” starring Barry Keoghan and Christopher Abbott and A24’s “Parthenope” directed by “The Great Beauty” auteur Paolo Sorrentino are hoping to attract cinephiles. “Parasite,” which made Oscar history in 2020 as the first international film to win best picture, has an IMAX re-release.
Finally, for filmgoers in Los Angeles, the emotional Palestinian documentary “No Other Land” following destruction and displacement in Gaza — currently predicted to win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature — is playing in limited release despite still not having a U.S. distributor.
