The Most Naked Dresses at the 2024 Met Gala

From sublimely sensual to scandalously sheer.

We knew what we were in for when we learned this year's Met Gala theme. After all, nature is nothing if not sexy. Mother Nature's bounty aside, flowers have one thing on their minds, and that is not the weather. Add in the fact that sheer red carpet looks have dominated 2024's award season, and you've got a recipe for sensual and over-the-top celebrity ensembles. Artful, impactful, and very nearly naked, the Met Gala looks ahead were worn by guests who chose to bare it all in the name of fashion.

Of course, part of what makes red carpet fashion, especially Met Gala red carpet looks, so captivating is the act of provocation. The best couture pushes boundaries, celebrates the human body, and makes us feel something. The 2024 Met Gala arrivals are well underway, with plenty of looks aimed to titillate, captivate, and show a bit of skin. As you'll see for yourself, they have more than been delivered.

Bold and dramatic, but never gauche, the designer ensembles ahead, along with the celebs that dared to wear them, deserve a round of applause, not just for bringing the magic of the Met Gala to life but for the behind-the-seams effort it took to pull the fantasy off. Boob tape is no joke, y'all. Illusion mesh shapewear is positively stifling. Emma Chamberlin, Rita Ora, J.Lo, and all other nearly naked Met Gala guests, we salute you.

We love a nearly-naked look that toys with subtlety. Apparently, so does Dua Lipa. Despite its many layers, her deconstructed Marc Jacobs look delivered a sense of undone undressing.

Phoebe Dynevor in Victoria Beckham and Bucherer Fine Jewellery

Phoebe Dynevor's custom Victoria Beckham look was the epitome of ethereal sheerness, complete with romantic and perfectly color-matched floral lingerie and petal pasties.

Rita Ora in Marni

Of all the night's nearly-naked looks, Rita Ora's beautifully beaded Marni ensemble is likely the most colorful not to mention the most revealing. We award ten points to House Ora for excellence in color: bold when it came to the beads and perfectly subtle when it came to her skin-tone-matching bodysuit.

FKA Twigs in Stella McCartney

FKA Twigs' Stella McCartney look was another beautiful example of the power of illusion mesh that properly matches the wearer's skin tone. We've scrutinized Twigs' ensemble from head to toe and still can't tell where the delicate rhinestone-embellished mesh begins or ends.

Elle Fanning in Balmain and Cartier Jewelry

Elle Fanning's committed to barely-there from the ice sculpture-esque figurines on her gown to her sleek translucent sandals. Fanning's Cartier jewelry was equally icy albeit more substantial than her gauzy Balmain gown.

Doja Cat in Vetements

Love it or hate it, you can't deny that Doja Cat's Vetements look stood out on the steps of the Met. Her long T-shirt dress was indeed drenched, capturing the magic and movement of drapery held in place only by the artist's artfully placed hands.

Emma Chamberlin in Jean Paul Gaultier and Cartier Jewelry

Any red carpet-ready Jean Paul Gaultier is guaranteed to deliver sublime sensuality and Emma Chamberlin's lacy ensemble was no exception.

Nearly naked, but make it bridal. Greta Lee's angelic Loewe gown was both airy and structural, featuring featherlight floral adornments and sinuous boning.

Emily Ratajkowski in Atelier Versace

Emily Ratajkowski is no stranger to baring it all in couture, often managing to do so in long-sleeved gowns. (Truly, it's an art form.) For the 2024 Met Gala, Ratajkowski went vintage in an Atelier Versace gown from the Fall/Winter 2001 Haute Couture collection.

Also opting for sheer floral lace, Alexandra Daddario's burnished gold approach featured additional, but subtle, coverage thanks to a nude bodysuit.

Met Gala co-chair Jennifer Lopez's Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown seemed to take inspiration from an underwater garden. The shimmering metallic gown echoed coral in its whimsical design while still feeling oh so J.Lo.

Tyla in Balmain

Tyla is a professed fashion risk-taker and couture thrill-seeker, so we expected sexy. We did not expect a dress conjured from sand, but that's exactly — and literally — what the singer's Balmain gown beautifully embodied.
