More trouble brews for Today

As rumours continue to swirl of a Karl comeback, the current cast of the Today show have been dealt another blow.

The faltering breakfast show slumped to its lowest ratings numbers yet this week, with TV blog TV Tonight calling it an “all-time low in survey for the 7-9am standard.”

The program brought in just 155,000 viewers on Friday, while in the glory days of Karl and Lisa, audiences of less than 200,000 would have left producers quaking in their boots.

Rival show Sunrise pulled in closer to 300,000 viewers on that same Friday, which only fuels suspicions that the current cast will not outlive the Christmas break.

A scathing report in the Daily Telegraph at the weekend quoted an insider saying that the low ratings could be “the nail in the coffin for the current crew”.

A Karl comeback?

Twelve months after he was sacked from the coveted gig, Karl Stefanovic has been tipped to return to Today next year alongside network star Allison Langdon, according to media analyst Julian Evans.

Julian claims to have a source within Nine and says the duo are set to make their debut at the network’s new North Sydney tower in 2020, with Georgie Gardner shifting over as co-host of Today Extra.

Julian shared the speculation on Twitter on Friday sending viewers into a frenzy. Even entertainment reporter Peter Ford shared his thoughts on the matter, which could be the “TV story of the year”.

Nine sets it straight

However, Channel Nine was quick to shoot down the validity of the chatter and while they wouldn’t confirm whether or not Karl and Allison would take the reigns of the Today show, they did reveal to Yahoo Lifestyle the network’s new studios wouldn’t be constructed until at least mid next year.

But despite this, Friday wasn’t the first time Karl and Allison were pointed to as the only pair capable of bringing the breakfast show out of its ratings slump.
