Mom Uses Dollar Store Finds to Transform Backyard Into Ultimate Dog Playground
Teaching your dog new tricks doesn't have to be costly. In fact, it can cost less than ordering a pizza—if you shop at the right place. One woman sought out the perfect items to create an agility course for her pups and you can, too!
A recent Instagram video posted by Leah (@the.hippie.hound) shows the budget-friendly playground she made for her dogs Ellie and Penny using simple items from the Dollar Store. Follow her lead, and your pups can have an amazing course on the cheap!
In the video that says, "Dollar Store agility course," Leah shops at her local money-saving store where she grabs pool noodles, plastic bins, a hula hoop, and broom handles to create tunnels to run beneath, bars to hop over and a hoop to jump through. Penny is a fan, testing it out like a total pro!
"Total cost = $14. Memories made = priceless," the caption says.
The unique idea is catching the eyes of followers who vow to recreate the course in their own yards to expose their dogs to this level of play.
"Omg, YES! Thank you! I want to do more agility training with my dog but the equipment is so expensive!" one person said.
"So creative! We've been wanting to get into agility but want to test the waters first before splurging on a set! Totally going to try this," another wrote.
Many others stated the idea is "clever," "creative," and "genius," so it definitely resonated—and we're sure the dogs will love it!
Benefits of Agility Training
Whether your pup is athletic or a couch potato, VCA Hospitals explains nearly all dogs can benefit from agility training. It helps things like coordination, endurance, speed, and more as they jump and run through the designated props.
Training dogs to utilize their natural instincts by mimicking hunting through agility tickles that genetic itch while also giving them a great workout. This is especially good for dogs with a lot of energy to burn and it also exercises their mind.
Agility training also helps bond you and your dog more than the typical walk or tug-of-war. They rely on you to communicate and give them cues on where to go through the course as you run beside them, strengthening the trust between you two.
Before starting, make sure your dog can handle this kind of activity because it can be physically demanding. Once you have the right motivation (treats!), get ready to show them a fun time. And if you're on a budget, give Leah's tips a try!
