One child’s birthday party at Build-a-Bear did not go how the parents had hoped.

In a post on Reddit’s r/Parenting forum from 2019 that is again going viral, one mom shared her experience taking her daughter to a birthday party for a friend from her daughter’s school, hosted at a Build-a-Bear. “We had cake and pizza in the food court, then went down to [Build-a-Bear] to make bears, then back to [the] friend’s house for the rest of the party,” she explained in the post.

The parent then detailed how the invite explained that the kids would each get to make their own bear at the party, “and I just assumed they would get to take them home, since that is what happened at another BAB party I went to,” the parent explained. “Me and my husband even pitched in about 30 dollars as we know these things can get expensive.”

Unfortunately, the mom’s assumption was wrong. After letting her daughter pick out her stuffed animal (“a standard dog with a shirt,” she wrote) the mother of the birthday girl then instructed all of the attendees to hand their creations over to her daughter.

“Cue the upset and angry kids,” the poster continued. “They all disappointingly handed over their animals, and friend wasn’t even being nice about it either. Another little boy didn’t want to, and friend ripped it out of his hands.”

The mom detailed how many of the other parents were “pretty baffled” by this development, and though she admitted, “I probably should have said something,” every child eventually forfeited their Build-a-Bear and the party moved to the friend’s house.

“We get back to friend’s house and our kids are watching as friend plays with all her new animals,” the woman continued in the post. “I left with my daughter pretty quickly, and once we got back into the car she just started bawling.”

Ultimately, poster and her husband took their daughter to Build-a-Bear to let her build a new toy that she got to keep, but she made the Reddit post to ask other parents if this was an outcome she should’ve expected from the event.

The six-year-old post, which has seen a resurgence in popularity after it was revitalized on TikTok recently, has baffled many parents in the comments.

“That’s so far outside the norm,” one Redditor commented on the post. “I might broach the topic with the parents, as I would be concerned they don’t understand what a breach of social custom that was.”

“That was cruel to the kids attending the party,” another piped in. “I think the person that this is worst for is the birthday girl. The other kids are going to hate her (and clearly at her age it is the parent’s fault, but they won’t get that).”

In the comments, the mom also confirmed that she brought the birthday girl a gift in addition to the bear, prompting many other Reddit users to insist she ask for her money back from the mother.

In an update made to the post, the poster detailed the confrontation she and another parent had with the mom of the birthday girl in which they tried to get some answers — to little avail.

She explained that the other mother, whom she dubbed “Karen” for the post, said, “ 'We wanted (daughter) to have a special animal decorated by each of her friends.' ”

“ 'I was just wondering why the kids didn’t get to keep their bears,' ” the poster replied in the reenactment in her update. “ 'I even pitched in a little bit of money, assuming the bears would go to the kids.' "

The mother of the birthday girl then said, “Well I didn’t have enough money for each of the guests to make their own, that would get pretty expensive! If you want your money back, I’ll see about getting it back to you. I don’t really see the problem though," the poster wrote.

Even though the poster pointed out how “obviously [the kids] are going to be upset about it, and how she didn't "see why your daughter needs all these animals,” the mom of the birthday girl didn’t respond and walked away from the conversation.

“What bothers me is she said she ‘didn’t have enough money for all the kids to have one,’ but she did have enough for her daughter to get like 8 bears,” the mom continued after the update. “Just doesn’t really make sense.”

Though there wasn’t a more satisfying resolution to the situation, the poster concluded the thread with a note that “no one’s fighting,” and that she wouldn't mention it to the mother again.
