Modibodi launches world’s first biodegradable period and pee-proof undies

Modibodi is known for its period-proof underwear to help stop the landfill created by period products such as sanitary towels and tampons. Now, they've taken their commitment to sustainability a step further and launched the world's first biodegradable underwear.
The period and pee-proof undies are 97% biodegradable, and last for over 100 washes. After that, when they're buried in active soil, they completely disappear after five years.
"Our Biodegradable Briefs aim to reduce the impact of disposables and textile waste on our planet," says Kristy Chong, Modibodi founder and CEO. "They're made from TENCEL™, (made from sustainably sourced wood) Merino wool which wicks away moisture, and bamboo terry to absorb fluids. There's also a biodegradable TPU film as the waterproof layer to seal-in fluids."
The briefs last for 100 washes, which means they'll see you through eight years of periods when washed once a month. Then, when they're at the end of their life, all you have to do is cut off the elastic and discard them in regular waste to biodegrade. Then, bury the remaining part of the briefs in active soil (full of bugs and microorganisms). They'll start to biodegrade within four to six weeks.

It's taken two years of scientific testing to ensure the briefs are comfortable and effective, as well as biodegradable.
“The key barrier to biodegradability is the elastane used in the fabric to provide stretch and comfort alongside that used in waist and leg elastics," explains Chong.
"Modibodi has solved this issue by using a super fine rib knit construction in the main fabric to maintain its shape and stretch without the need for elastane."
Expect to see more sustainability initiatives from Modibodi too - they have a goal to be carbon negative by the end of 2023.
The new biodegradable briefs come in a full brief and bikini style, and are the same quality as the regular Modibodi range.
