Mindy Kaling Reveals If She'd Ever Reprise Her Role as Kelly Kapoor on “The Office ”Reboot (Exclusive)
The actress weighed in on the new spinoff series on the latest episode of PEOPLE in 10
Mindy Kaling is not taking a Kelly Kapoor reprisal off the table.
As Kaling stopped by PEOPLE in 10, she shared her thoughts on whether she'd ever revisit her iconic character from The Office and how she's feeling about the new spinoff series.
"It's been such a long time since I’ve acted as Kelly Kapoor that I’m like, 'Oh, I’d have to get into character' — not to sound method," the actress, 44, said. "But I’m like, 'What would she be like? At my age?'"
Regardless of the intricacies of what the Kelly Kapoor of today would look like, Kaling affirmed that if the question ever arose, she would "of course" consider it.
"For that group of people, I would definitely – I’d be open to it."
As for the spinoff series, which was announced earlier this month and is set to star Domhnall Gleeson and The White Lotus' Sabrina Impacciatore, Kaling told host Makho Ndlovu: "I think it’s gonna be great."
"I don’t have anything to do with it, but I’m big fans of the people behind the scenes, so I think it’ll be good," she said, referring to Greg Daniels, who originally adapted the British version of the sitcom, and Michael Koman, who are leading the force on the spinoff.
Only Gleeson, 41, and Impacciatore, 56, have been cast so far, but the new Peacock series is set to begin production in July. It will see the same documentary crew that "immortalized Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch in search of a new subject."
The crew will discover "a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters," giving fans yet another hilarious office dynamic to fall in love with.
Since the spinoff was announced, much of the cast of the original sitcom have weighed in on their reactions — and shared whether they'd ever throw their hat in the ring again.
“I will be watching but I will not be showing up," Steve Carell told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about potentially reprising his role as the beloved Michael Scott. "It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that. But I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great concept. I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company."
Carell, 61, then praised Gleeson, who he worked with on The Patient, as "an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it'll be great."
John Krasinski, another fan-favorite star, told PEOPLE that "they haven't asked" him to take part in the spinoff, "but the truth is I'd do anything Greg Daniels asked me to do."
"I know nothing about it other than I think it's taking place in a newspaper, a local newspaper and that Domhnall Gleeson, who I am working with right now, who’s the sweetest most talented guy, he’s going to crush… whatever it is… he’s going to crush it," Krasinski, 44, said.
