Mick Jagger Pens Emotional Tribute to ‘Wonderful Friend’ Marianne Faithfull
Mick Jagger joined the chorus of emotional tributes made to Marianne Faithfull this week following the news of her death at age 78.
The Rolling Stones frontman, who dated the English singer and actress for several years during the 1960s, shared a collection of old photographs on Instagram on Thursday, Jan. 30. The six-part Instagram carousel began with a black and white snapshot showing the two out and about in the time that they were together, with Jagger’s arm slung casually around Faithfull’s shoulders as she flashed a small smile at something out of view of the camera.
Jagger’s collection included one photo of the former couple posing together and four portraits of the “As Tears Go By” songstress when she was young.
“I am so saddened to hear of the death of Marianne Faithfull,” Jagger, 81, wrote in his Instagram caption. "She was so much part of my life for so long. She was a wonderful friend, a beautiful singer and a great actress. She will always be remembered.”
Jagger’s surviving bandmates, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, also acknowledged Faithfull’s death in Thursday posts on Instagram.
“My heartfelt condolences to Marianne’s family! I am so sad and will miss her!!” Richards wrote before signing his message, “Love, Keith.” Unlike Jagger’s throwback photos from the 1960s, Richards’ post included a more recent snapshot of himself seated beside Faithfull as he clinked a glass to a teacup that she held in one hand.
“Farewell dear Marianne ❤️🙏,” Wood wrote to accompany a black and white photo showing Faithfull smiling as she stood beside Wood and Richards. He later shared a more recent photo of himself performing with Faithfull onstage. “Marianne will be dearly missed ❤️🙏Bless her xx,” he wrote in the caption for his second post.
A spokesperson for Faithfull announced her death in a statement shared with the BBC on Thursday. ”Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family,” the statement said, adding, "She will be dearly missed.” The spokesperson did not identify the cause of Faithfull’s death.
