Michelle Yeoh, 62, Shares Why She Never Had Children: 'Biggest Sadness In My Life'
Michelle Yeoh has achieved so much in her life, including winning an Academy Award. But the 62-year-old felt like a “failure” after struggling to conceive a child, she shared in a new interview.
During a November 18 episode of the BBC Radio 4 show Woman’s Hour, Michelle said that she always wanted to start a family and even underwent fertility treatments. However, the process didn't go the way she had hoped, which ended up impacting her marriage.
So, does Michelle Yeoh have children now? Here’s what you need to know.
Does Michelle Yeoh have children?
No, Michelle does not have biological children, calling it "the biggest sadness in my life," per the Times.
Not having her own children was “honestly not for the lack of trying, because I have always and still do love babies,” she said on Woman's Hour. “Sometimes, honestly, I still think about it.”
However, she became a bonus mom through marriage. She's also a godmother to "six godchildren, many nephews and nieces," she told the Times.
Fertility was the ‘main factor’ that ended her first marriage.
Struggling to conceive was a big reason why her first marriage to business magnate Dickson Poon ended, Michelle shared on Woman's Hour. (The couple were married from 1988 to 1992.)
“The worst moment to go through is every month, you feel like such a failure,” Michelle said. “And then you go, ‘Why?’ And I think at some point, you stop blaming yourself. I go, ‘There are certain things in your body that doesn’t function in a certain way. That’s how it is.’ You just have to let go and move on. And I think you come to a point where you have to stop blaming you.”
But her marriage to Poon was, in part, "about having children, a next generation and all that," she said. The two were “brave” to split, “because we tried,” she said.
"You also have to understand, these are conversations that you really have to have with yourself and be able to look ahead and think, ‘Yes, we love each other very much now, but in 10 years or 20 years, I still can’t give him the family that he craves for,’" she said. "And you have to be fair."
Michelle is now married to French motor racing executive Jean Todt, whom she wed in 2023 after being engaged for 19 years. (Todt popped the question after just a month of dating, per People.)
She is a godmother, an aunt, and a grandmother.
While Michelle doesn’t have biological children, she has a large extended family. Her husband has a son from a previous relationship named Nicolas, who welcomed a son named Maxime with wife Darina earlier this year.
“I’m 62. Of course, I’m not going to have a baby right now, but the thing is we just had a grandchild,” Michelle said. “Then you feel you’re still very, very blessed because you do have a baby in your life.”
Michelle also has six godchildren, including Poon's daughter. In 2023, she shared a series of throwback snaps with them.
“Time flies and so blessed with my beautiful goddaughter children 😍😍😍🌹,” she captioned the post.
