Michael Strahan Sends a Clear Message After Fan Outrage Over 'Disrespectful' Gesture Before Veterans Day

After receiving backlash on social media for a gesture many perceived to be "disrespectful," Michael Strahan sent a strong message to fans on Veterans Day.

The Fox Sports analyst kicked off a controversy on Sunday, Nov. 10, when he stood with his hands interlocked in front of him—instead of putting one hand over his heart—during the national anthem on the network's broadcast from the San Diego Naval Base.

On social media, viewers accused the Good Morning America host of being "disrespectful," with Newsmax host Todd Starnes posting via X: "Michael Strahan disrespected the military during a Veterans Day pre-game show on @NFLonFOX."

"The great irony is Strahan on a ship surrounded by men and women who would willingly sacrifice their lives to protect his freedom. So, his behavior is not just repugnant, it's downright cowardly," Starnes added.

Commenters disagreed on whether or not Strahan's action was unpatriotic.

"Shame on you …u did not honor your father as u claim ..respect…put your hand on your heart disrespectful," wrote one person.

"no disrespect. You cover for the pledge, not anthem," argued someone else.

Seemingly in response, Strahan took to Instagram on Monday, Nov. 11, to share a photo of his father, Major Gene W. Strahan.

"Thank you to all veterans and active service members who courageously risk their lives to protect us every day," Strahan wrote in his caption. "Your selfless service is beyond measure. This is my hero, it is also my father, Maj. Gene W. Strahan, Sr. He served for 23 years in the army and was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Just as I honor my father, I keep all of you in my thoughts each and every day as we would not have the safety and freedoms we cherish without you. Thank You. #VeteransDay."
