McDonald's Just Launched a New Meal That Has People Rushing to the Drive-Thru

It’s hard to predict which Happy Meal toys will become a collector’s item. We understand the vogue for McDonald’s Beanie Babies and Grimace Squishmallows, but it takes a real completist to feel a desire for an Uncle O’Grimacey ring. That said, we’re still hoarding our Adult Happy Meal toys from two years ago—we just know that someday, that four-eyed Hamburglar will be worth more than its weight in Quarter Pounders.

Some of the best Happy Meals, though, are connected to other cultural references beyond McDonaldland. This fall, we longed for McDonald’s Spain’s ”Friends” toys to come stateside, complete with a side of Monica’s Marinara sauce. Over on American soil, Pet Simulator Happy Meals made us smile just before Thanksgiving. But the latest launch from McDonald’s is connected to a movie that brings up memories for both parents and their kids.

McDonald’s Introduces New "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" Happy Meals

Care for a taste of nostalgia, anyone? We remember playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on a Sega Genesis back in 1991. Our kids? They’ve been following the spiky little guy their whole lives, particularly after the release of several ”Sonic the Hedgehog” films.

And this is not the first time the hypersonic hedgehog has collaborated with Mickey D’s. You may remember when the Golden Arches released a ”Sonic the Hedgehog 2” Happy Meal in 2022, connected with the release of that movie.

The ”Sonic the Hedgehog 3” Happy Meals include eight different roller toys. Kids will find the Sonic Blue Roller, Tails Yellow Roller, Shadow Orange Roller, Sonic Yellow Roller, Knuckles Red Roller, Shadow Red Roller, Knuckles White Roller, or Tails Blue Roller, along with stickers ”for added shoe and roller detailing” in their meals. As for the food, it’s a classic Happy Meal, which includes a choice of hamburger or either 4-piece or 6-piece McNuggets.

The Happy Meal boxes are branded with Sonic himself or his nemesis, Shadow. ”I think collectors would probably collect the boxes themselves and actually keep them because they look that good,” says Youtuber iCollect. One side also features Sonic’s buddies Tails and Knuckles.

According to some posters on McDonald’s Instagram, the promotion spoils elements of the movie, including the box, which features images of all eight toys on one side. But fans don’t seem too busted up over learning some key plot points.

“These McDonald’s toys are so cool! I just got my Sonic and Shadow one today also,” said one Youtube commenter. Instagram commenters call them ”A reason to go to McDonald’s” alone, pointing out you’ve ”Gotta go fast 🔥” if you want to catch the Sonic 3 Happy Meal while it’s in stock.

Maybe you don’t need sonic speed, but if past Happy Meals are any indication, don’t wait too long to get to your nearest drive-thru.
