While Mel B thought it was Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Dave Hughes was set on Rachel McAdams and Abbie Chatfield believed it to be Bec Hewitt, it was former Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins who became the fifth celebrity unmasked this season.
“You were right Chrissie Swan!” host Osher Günsberg exclaimed as she jumped up and down and said, “So satisfying!”.
“I’m so grateful to be here, honestly, and thank you so much for having me,” Emma remarked after being revealed.
“I’m really nervous about singing. I grew up as a dancer, so I really only learned to sing through the Wiggles. I was always very afraid to sing in front of people, and so the idea of this show was absolutely perfect. I’m actually very grateful to Zombie and I owe her everything.”
There were a number of clues pointing to Emma being Zombie, including references to her hair colour and the fact that she was the third person to take on the role of the Yellow Wiggle.
“My teenage years were spent in the golden arches” was a nod toward The McDonald College in Sydney where Emma studied performing arts.
The letters ‘UTS’ referenced the university she graduated from in 2012, while the letters ‘PHD’ referred to the PhD she is currently studying about integrating dance and Auslan on screen.
Following her reveal, a number of fans took to social media to praise Emma’s performance on the show.
“Beyond incredible. Cutest Zombie ever,” one person wrote, while another added, “You should add your songs to Spotify, you are amazing”.
“Great Job Emma, you didn’t deserve to leave yet though!” a third commented, followed by someone else who said she was “robbed”.
Meanwhile, plenty of Emma’s followers admitted that they knew it was her from the very first episode.
“Your voice and body language/dancing are so unique. My girls play your Emma episodes all the time so I recognised you straight away!” a fan shared.
“Heard you sing once and picked it immediately! This is what happens when you have a 3-year-old Emma Wiggle fan,” another remarked.
The Masked Singer continues tonight at 7:30pm on Ten.
