Australia Ranked ‘Worst’ Country When It Comes To Climate Change Action

Australia is reportedly the "worst performing" developed nation when it comes to climate change, says a new report released today.

The Climate Action Network Europe and Germanwatch put Australia at number 57 on the list of 58 countries reviewed, with Saudi Arabia sliding in at last place.

"While the developed world is going in one direction, Australia is going in the opposite," said Guy Ragen, a climate change campaigner for the Australian Conservation Foundation, which helped compile the findings.

Just this week, it was revealed that Julie Bishop had tried to book a ticket to the Climate Conference in Peru - but was denied by Tony Abbott's office.

Possibly sensing that the rest of the world would look unfavourably at the absence, Bishop went around the PM's office and put the issue to the Federal Cabinet - who, of course, had no problems with sending delegates to such an event.

The PM's office was then forced to backtrack its stance, which it clearly wasn't happy about because it's now sending Andrew Robb - a noted climate sceptic, along too.

However, it seems Bishop’s intent isn’t exactly innocent either, with Yahoo7! News reporting that she plans to lobby members of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee not to list the reef as a World Heritage site in danger next year.

"It's very disappointing that our foreign minister is trying to frighten foreign governments, instead of Australia taking strong action," WWF's Great Barrier Reef coastal campaign manager Louise Matthiesson told AAP.
