Cate Blanchett has come under fire over the rousing speech she made at former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's funeral.

John Howard has hit out at the actress over the eulogy she gave at the state memorial service for former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in Sydney last month. During her heartfelt speech Blanchett praised Mr Whitlam's legacy, crediting him with introducing free tertiary education.

“When I went to university, I could explore different courses and engage with the student union in extra-curricular activity. It was through that that I discovered acting,” Blanchett told mourners.

But Mr Howard disagrees. Speaking to the Herald Sun, the former Prime Minister labelled the actress’ speech as “outrageous."

"[She] is a talented actor, I admire her talent, but to suggest that Whitlam introduced free university education is wrong.”

“The last three years of my university education were completely free and that was 11 years before Whitlam came to power."
