Foreign Minister Julie Bishop appeared on a morning show today, answering a range of questions about the Liberal Party leadership spill and the future of the country. She also took a somewhat less serious question from journalist Karl Stefanovic, who asked Bishop to comment on the Governor General’s staff asking for over $100,000 worth of luxury appliances, including a $2,000 Thermomix. “Do you know what a Thermomix is?” Stefanovic asked the Foreign Minister, before adding “Two grand for an appliance is a lot of money.”

Without even missing a beat, Bishop responded “I’m going to answer in emoji.” She quickly pulled a face bearing a remarkable resemblance to the shocked/confused Emoji face (suggesting two things: firstly, she has no idea what a Thermomix is and secondly, her working knowledge of Emoji game is strong).

Stefanovic – and some of his off-screen crew – burst into laughter. “That’s why you rock Julie Bishop,” he said.

This isn’t the first time the Foreign Minister has proved her affinity with Emojis in the news media. Two weeks ago she took part in an interview with online resource Buzzfeed conducted solely in Emojis. When asked about Australia’s relationship with China, she used the thumbs up, tick and sunglasses Emoji. Responding to a question about her views on marriage equality, the Foreign Minister shared an Emoji depicting clapping hands.

And for the record? A Thermomix is a high-powered food processor beloved by amateur chefs the world over for its ability to blitz food extremely quickly.
