Will Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop be Australia’s next female Prime Minister? A new poll charting the approval ratings of key members of the Liberal party suggest Bishop might be closer than you think, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Bishop now sits at a 20 per cent approval rating, exactly level with Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Bishop’s current approval rating has almost doubled in the past five months. She’s particularly strong with women voters, 27 per cent of whom polled prefer her as the Liberal party leader (compared to 18 per cent who prefer Tony Abbott).

This comes as Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek’s popularity rises. Last year Julia Gillard touted her as a future potential Prime Minister.
