Lara Stone Faced Pregnancy Discrimination

We hear a lot about pregnancy from celebrities, but rarely do they discuss how it's affected their career.

While models including Alessandra Ambrosio have taken to the catwalk with a baby bump, others haven't been quite so lucky, with Lara Stone stating she was fired from a high-profile fashion campaign after disclosing her pregnancy.

"I was really upset at the time," Stone told the London Evening Standard of the discrimination. "I hadn't yet had my three-month scan and I felt really vulnerable about everything. I no longer had a job. That was it - I had to just stop everything that I knew; the way my life was."

Stone admitted she also felt alienated while pregnant, with designers shunning her as soon as they heard she was expecting.

"I've had a few meetings because when they hear pregnancy they freak out a bit," she said, "so they need to see if I fit in their clothes. Everyone's so nice to you all the time. And its like, 'Ugh, you don't have to be'. It feels quite alienating because its like everyone's just lying to you. Because everyones like, 'Youre great!' And you're, 'Well, obviously I'm not.'"

And while other celebrities seem to gloat about fitting into their skinny jeans just days after giving birth, Stone says the reality of her pregnancy wasn't quite so glamorous.

"I was in maternity jeans at nine weeks. I was bloated all over, had limp greasy hair, no energy and I could eat (and waddle) for England," she said. "There is so much pressure these days to look fantastic during pregnancy and to lose the weight within days of leaving [the] hospital. I have nothing against those who do, but it's not normal. Your body changes hugely during pregnancy and it takes time to go back."
