It has begun: Prince Harry is in the building. The redhead prince arrived on our shores yesterday, jetting in to Sydney airport on a commercial British Airways flight (Royals, they’re just like us) before heading to Canberra. He undertook a tour of our nation’s capital – including a visit to the war memorial and the tomb of the unknown soldier – before flying to Darwin to begin his month-long military secondment in Australia.

Let’s get the bad news over first: this Canberra appearance is the Prince’s first and only official engagement while in Australia. His four-week secondment with the Australian army – which has been described as “challenging and hectic” by Prince Harry’s spokesperson – will take him to Darwin, Perth and then back to Sydney. Captain Wales, as he is known in the army, will then head to Gallipoli to take part in the centenary celebrations on Anzac Day, before returning to our neck of the woods for a quick trip to New Zealand.

Disappointing, yes. But in the limited time he has with the public, Prince Harry is already winning fans. During his official public engagements in Canberra yesterday, he took time to speak to schoolboy Ethan Toscan, who was standing outside the War Memorial with a sign saying ‘Redheads Rule’.

“We had a chat,” Toscan told the ABC. “He said it must be a pleasure to be a redhead, and such a privilege.”

Prince Harry also made an official pronouncement on that most important of topics: selfies. “I hate selfies,” he told a fan. “Seriously, you need to get out of it. I know you’re young, but selfies are bad. Just take a normal photograph!”

Consider yourself warned, Australia.
