Alfred Hitchcock would have loved Sarah Gadon. Ice-queen blonde, with eyes like Tippi Hedren, the 28-year-old Canadian is
a throwback to film stars of old. Perhaps that’s why the actress often works for auteurs: first with David Cronenberg, with whom she has worked on three films, and now with Julian Jarrold, the director best known for Jane Austen biopic Becoming Jane.

Gadon is front and centre in Jarrold’s latest, A Royal Night Out, set on May 8, 1945 (or, as it is more popularly known: VE Day). Gadon is Princess Elizabeth – yes, the One Who Would Be Queen – who escapes the confines of Buckingham Palace with her sister, Princess Margaret, for a night of frivolity among the jubilant commoners. “There’s something magical about the story,” says Gadon of what attracted her to the feelgood flick, which trundles along merrily like an auxiliary girl on a bicycle. “It reminded me of films I loved when I was growing up, like Roman Holiday.”

Based loosely on a true story (yes, the princesses did get to leave the palace; no, they probably didn’t strike up friendships with strapping young Air Force officers), the film is a blip of sugary sweetness on Gadon’s otherwise indie-studded CV. What would she do, if given a night off from fame and fortune?

“I would dance all night long,” she says without hesitation. “Wouldn’t that be the best thing?”
