Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney is pushing to help free Peter Greste's colleagues from jail.

The 37-year old is flying to Egypt this week in a bid to upstage Canadian officials, whom she believes aren't being aggressive enough when it comes to the release of her client, Al Jeezera journalist Mohammed Fahmy.

Fahmy remains in detention alongside Egyptian Baher Mohammed, who was arrested in conjunction with Australian Peter Greste on suspected terror charges.

No evidence was ever provided and Greste thankfully walked free from jail late last week. The race to free his colleagues is now on.

"I have been in touch with the Fahmy family and we are all delighted that Peter Greste has been released," Clooney said in a statement. "As Mr. Fahmy's counsel we are doing all we can to ensure the same outcome for Mr. Fahmy, who has suffered the same injustice.

"Despite clear assurances that he would be released, Mr. Fahmy remains in detention in Egypt. I therefore plan to visit Cairo in the near future to meet with Mr. Fahmy and to discuss the prospects for his release."

A retrial date has been sent for February 12.
