It seems the beauty industry may be on its way to embracing diversity, with transgender model Lea T landing a huge contract with haircare brand Redken.

The beauty is the current muse for Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, and has graced the cover of several major international fashion magazines over the last few years.

"We're all people with our own personality, our own beauty, our own life," said Lea T in a statement. "I love working with Redken because they appreciate all kinds of beauty. They believe in the individuality of the person, and I think that's really important."

Lea isn't the only transgender model to make it big in the fashion industry. Just last month, Andreja Pejic made her first public appearance as a woman following her gender reassignment surgery.

Pejic, who formerly went by the name Andrej, made headlines for her versatile look, which enabled her to model both men and womenswear.

Her first runway appearance was for Gaultier in 2010, where she wowed industry insiders with her unusual look.

"Andrej is obviously beautiful and he has the most amazing figure," said Hilary Alexander from the Telegraph UK, "when you consider that a lot of designers are designing for this impossible ideal for someone who is 5ft 11in, no hips and no chest."

marie claire Australia first spotted the model post gender reassignment surgery at a fashion week party in New York, where she told us she was "beyond excited" the surgery was complete.

"I knew I was a woman from a young age," she said.
