MAFS’ Sara reacts to Ryan’s shocking X-rated comment about Jacqui
Married At First Sight 2024 participant Sara sat down with Yahoo Lifestyle to chat all about the new season.
Video transcript
Talk about it to your best mate.
Whatever, like not on national television.
It's like people forget that they're being filmed.
Thank you so much for coming in, Sarah.
Thank you for having me.
My first question is something that we have all been dying to ask you since your season last year.
Sarah or Sara?
What do you prefer?
How have we still not gotten it?
It's Sarah, but it is spelled Sara, so I can understand.
But yeah, Sarah confusion come from?
I have no idea.
I think it was because Tim was calling me Sarah, and then I think because it is spelled Sara, then there was other people saying Sara, and then I didn't really correct people until like after a while when everyone was saying it.
I was like, OK, now I've got to say it because no one's saying it right.
There is so much we have to talk about with this week on maths.
Firstly, how does it feel watching the show after being on it last year?
Honestly, it feels good to be on the other side.
Like, I now know kind of what goes on behind closed doors.
I can kind of look at it with that kind of light.
Um, I think beforehand, when I used to watch maths, I used to be like, Oh my God, I believe everything.
Like, I would literally believe everything and, and I would watch it and hate the villains and love the people that are very lovable, but now I See it in a way that I'm like, I can see how this was edited to look a certain way, um, or to be like, or to make someone look weird or make a weird comment, or like be creepy or this or that.
So now I'm like, I look at it and I'm like, I kind of try to second guess.
I was like, like question myself to be like, Is this correct?
Yeah.
Are there any big edits that you've noticed or anyone's portrayal that you've kind of been like, I see through that?
Um, like, to be honest, the wedding with, um, Lauren, like the sister.
I like, I can guarantee she said some, like she definitely said some crazy stuff like that came out of her mouth, and when you see it coming out of her mouth, you know that that was it.
But the thing that you do have to think about is when it happened.
So like you have to think about, did those things happen all at once, or was it like throughout the 10 hour day that they're filming?
Or like, um, you know, when you do the Voxies, they, they oxx you for like 30, 40 minutes sometimes.
So it's like, did they ask her, like, They just show the questions about her sister and do they just show her answers about her sister?
Was there other things going on, but they just made it about her sister.
Do you know what I mean?
Like it was like they wanted it to be a drama.
I'm sure it was like at some point and they were all saying things, but I think they made it a lot worse than it probably was.
Yeah.
Let's unpack the first moment.
It's from the commitment ceremony with Tim and Katie to the first commitment ceremony.
I remember feeling so scared my first commitment ceremony.
The experiment.
When you get a chance.
The audacity of this man.
And like, surely he was already there, like the producers would have just gotten him in, they did that for like dramatic effect.
See this is another thing you have to think about, producers, this is what they do.
Do you think maybe Katie was trying to save face?
Because she had a huge body blow, where she's feeling rejected.
I understand, and she was in and wanted to see what would happen.
Well, there hasn't been any indication that she has.
I came here for love, not to do work.
Oh my God, he's nitpicking the tiniest little things like she probably whipped out her laptop one time.
And for me, building that spark is by is by getting to know someone.
The only thing Katie knows about me is what I said in my vows.
Oh.
So after we left the honeymoon, I was hoping.
That's an edit right there.
And I would get something because we spent all that time together at what the whole 48 hours we knew each other.
Yes, Katie, she's got the power now.
Obviously the producers would have held him, made him interrupt.
He's in one of the rooms.
Yeah, tell us how the producers kind of organise when you walk into a dinner party or a commitment ceremony.
Well, like we all get Ubers there.
Like, it's all organised.
Everyone goes one by one with their couples.
Um, like Tim wouldn't have just gotten there by himself.
Like, there's producers at the front door, downstairs before the lift, so like, they I would have seen him come in.
Like, it's not like it was last minute.
They would have held him.
They would've like, This is perfect.
Like, dramatic effect.
Let's, let's hold him back here.
John was going pretty hard at Tim.
From your experience.
What is it like being on the other side of the couch and From your experience, as someone who has been, uh, you take a lot, you took a lot of shit from John.
It's like the other side's terrifying.
He's the most terrifying man ever, but like the loveliest, like off camera, right?
Like, they're all But like on camera, you're just like, oh my God, they're gonna give it to me.
I remember going into every single commitment ceremony, even if it was a good commitment ceremony.
I just remember feeling like the nerves, like, cause you just never know what they're gonna say, or, or you could think that you're going well, but then they pick something that they feel is not going well, you know, or it was always just very confronting, I think.
So it's, it's a lot to have that happen.
It's interesting as well, cause, I mean, the experts weren't giving Tim much of a Much room to explain himself I guess.
Like they were very much team Katie.
Did you ever feel like the experts kind of had a predetermined narrative about your time on the couch?
I don't think that they can be on both sides because the drama, they're like, you won't be entertained by that if they're trying to find the good in both people.
In therapy, that's what it is.
In therapy, you go, OK, well, maybe can you see how Tim might feel.
This way, or can you see how Katie might feel this way?
And they try to get each other to see each other's point of views, even though Tim, what I, what Tim did was horrible.
Like everything he's said and done, I think is terrible, but I think with therapy, you try to see the good in both or try to find a solution for both.
When you go into the commitment ceremonies, you sit on this couch, you know that they're gonna pick one person that they're going to defend and one person that they're not gonna defend.
So it was Tim's turn.
We only ever see like 10 minutes max.
They go on for like an hour each.
Each couple gets an hour.
So like it'll go like, yeah, forever.
You'll see us like towards the end just like yawning and it's yeah, it will be like 4 a.m. or something.
We have to get into.
Intimacy week.
We have to unpack Ryan's comment.
I'm dying to hear your thoughts.
OK, let's watch.
Obviously the task yesterday was for the partners to go away and it was their ultimate fantasy night, and I think everyone understood that it was their fantasy, not our fantasy.
Um, I don't think Ryan picked up that it was Jackie's fantasy, not his.
It didn't go the way either of us wanted, but uh.
We um I, I've gotta say like she gives, she is awesome.
I was gonna say like that.
Hell.
You just don't say that.
It was just a throwaway comment and it was disrespectful and all of us guys were just.
I'm so glad all the other guys were the same though, like, you know what it was like it kept getting better every round.
Shut up.
You just wanna go shake him up.
Bryan, just stop.
Stop.
Absolutely like pot, you know, like I just wouldn't say out loud, so I think that's that's actually so messed up.
No doubt it's gonna get back to it.
What?
I would be so embarrassed if Alessandra, well just say that firstly, but for Alessandra to be like, OK, that's enough, surely you'd realise, oh, maybe I shouldn't have said that.
No, absolutely.
How would you have felt if Tim had said that?
in the experiment to the other boys.
Like, disgusting.
Like, I would feel so exposed.
Like, I just feel like you don't talk about the dirty details.
I mean, like, talk about it to your best mate.
Whatever.
Like, not on national television.
It's like you it's like people forget that they're being filmed.
Like everything that you say is on camera.
And it could be shared with the world.
So watch what you say.
Did you and Tim ever have that discussion of, OK, let's keep certain things private, or was it just?
No, no, we never spoke.
Like, I, I just think it's like an unsaid thing.
Like you just, you should just know that the dirty details of your sex life should not be shared with the world.
Um, we both, I think when we, like, when the producers asked us if we had, you know, done the deed.
Um, Tim kind of said like, I'll let Sarah say it.
So he was very respectful in that sense.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Now let's go on to the dinner party and the big moment with Ryan and Jackie.
What he was saying to me was like, that comes after trust and it comes after a more emotional development.
Do you think your sister is beautiful?
My sister, of course, she's a beautiful, beautiful woman.
Absolutely.
Yeah, if you were to rank her in the room of women here, how would you rank her?
I don't think that's the right context.
It is.
It's a question.
How would you?
Your sister, the stuff you guys say is very like we're not compatible, like here's nothing I asked for.
Like I asked for someone intelligent, loyal, like, you know, like I can't change that.
Like I wasn't that is not a nice moment to say that's like giving up.
Oh, you guys have it at him because I've I've had this argument 5 times with you and I'm done.
Yeah, she's fed up.
I could tell she was fed up from day one.
Like I feel like it's so overwhelming facing everybody sometimes at those dinner parties and like I think like it seems like she gets quite overwhelmed.
Like I don't know Jackie personally but from what they've shown it shows that she gets really easily overwhelmed by things um but yeah so I like I mean if you need to go outside and self soothe or do something to like calm down, do it.
But like that's a very intense moment to have that shared in front of.
What happens when you storm out?
Like, what do the producers do?
Where do you go?
As someone who has stormed out a couple of times, um, they follow you.
Like the cameras follow you, they don't stop filming you, um, even if you're like stop filming, like, they just follow you to wherever you go.
If you like, run into the bathroom, they just wait outside for you.
Um, so you can't really get away from it.
Like you can rip off your mic and like hopefully they don't hear what you say.
Um, but yeah, they'll they'll keep filming you until You either come back or you're like, I'm going home.
And then what happens if you go home, yeah, um, if you go home, they give you your phone back and they call you an Uber and send you send you back home.
If you're like, I don't want to go back in, they'll try to convince you to stay.
They'll be like, if you go now, you know, you won't have your word like you won't get to explain what happened or like you won't get to do this and that.
So then they again, they try to convince you.
OK, yeah, I mean.
Was that 4th wall where they leave this beautifully presented dining room and then they're kind of in like the back lot and you see all the lights and everything.
And that's how you know it's like a set, right?
Like it kind of puts it into perspective like, oh, this is a show, like, it's not real life.
Like there are people in the background doing things like, like they're little, like, what, what's the word?
Like puppeteer, yeah, yeah.
Do we think Ryan and Jackie.
Have any chance of success.
I mean, we know they're not I know I I think from the start I knew that they were gonna be like problematic.
Like I think, I think they're both just very particular people, um, you know, like you could tell from the way that Ryan was like, I'm a warrior, I'm this, I'm that, like he's very, I don't know, I think.
He's kind of like, in his head about, like, what a man should be and how he needs to be here, but Jackie expects a man to be up here.
And you just could tell straight away, like, they were not gonna be compatible.
I feel like they've both spent a lot of time looking at why they're not compatible as well and saying, you're not what I asked for.
Did you?
Kind of take him for face value and be like, OK, this is who I've been paired with, or were you like, Oh, you didn't match up on this.
Like, how did you, I think at the very beginning, it was hard because I was like, there's a lot of things that, like, I asked for that I didn't get.
Um, so for example, I really wanted someone that could have a deep emotional conversation with me, and I found that very hard the first few weeks with Tim.
Um, but I think towards the like halfway through the show, we kind of said to each other like, let's just like like not put so much pressure on being each other's perfect person.
And try to get along, try to have fun, because like I think when you put too much pressure on it, like you're meant to like at the end of this we're gonna get married, like it just it sets you up for failure like and as soon as we did that we ended up getting along like a house on fire.
So yeah.
Yeah, just kind of just kind of saying like let's just, you know, why don't we just like pretend like we're friends, like friends dating, like let's date, like.
You know, stop thinking, oh, this is not what I asked for.
It's like, let's just, what, what do you like about me, you know?
Yeah.
And then once you start feeling comfortable, you, you get along.
Yeah.
Who do you think is gonna make it to the end of the experiment?
Uh, if we're gonna consider like every season and the success rate, probably one.
will they last like later on?
Probably.
Not.
Um, I hope that like Karina and Paul are still together.
I mean, R and Jeff, they're quite cute too.
Like I feel like it's cute that they knew each other.
Like, I don't know why they're so awkward though.
Like if they've already kind of dated, like, stop being so awkward.
Like this is a chance like you could literally just play house with a person you find attractive, you know, um, them two, I think.
Yeah.
Yeah.
