Luxury Tahoe Hotel Leaves Couples Scrambling After Canceling All Lakefront Weddings: 'It's Just Gutting Us'
One bride said there was "not even a hint" that her wedding could be disrupted, despite being in touch with the hotel's event staff on a weekly basis
Multiple couples have had their wedding plans upended after their high-end venue canceled all lakeside weddings on its property.
Just before Christmas last year, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino in Incline Village, Nevada — one of Tahoe's most popular luxury lakefront wedding spots — announced that it was "resuming plans for a multi-phased renovation," the first phase of which was expected to commence in early March 2025 and continue through May 2027.
Due to the ongoing construction, the hotel said, the south parcel of the property — which includes "the cottages, amenities, access to Lake Tahoe, the beach, the pier and the lakeside restaurants" — will not be available to guests. For the roster of couples booked to host their weddings by the lake at the resort, that meant receiving the disappointing news that their events have been canceled.

PEOPLE reached out to the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe for more information but did not immediately receive a response.
Pascal Dupuis, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe, said in a statement to San Francisco news outlet SFGate that the renovations were planned for a future date but in late 2024, the hotel opted to move up the schedule.
“As soon as we were made aware, we promptly communicated with impacted groups, including couples planning weddings at our property, to provide as much advance notice as possible,” Dupuis said in the statement. “The decision for timing of the planned renovation was not made lightly."
The manager noted that the hotel's staff was working with all of the affected couples to help them "explore alternatives for their planned event."
Bay Area residents Tanaya Deb and Nishal Gupta are among the many couples who have been left scrambling to salvage their wedding plans, according to SFGate. The high school sweethearts had been planning a 300-person Indian celebration at what they considered to be their dream venue, with guests set to fly in from around the world.
But in mid-December, they say, they received a call from a Hyatt sales representative informing them that their wedding had been canceled, along with all other lakefront weddings on the calendar, per SFGate. Just like that, their months-in-the-making plans were completely dashed.
Many of their family members in India had already booked flights and secured travel visas to attend the wedding, and Deb had commissioned custom bridal outfits that were handmade in India, per SFGate. By early January, the couple was still trying to cobble together a plan to save their wedding.
“We are in the heat of it, like super struggling to get our wedding going,” Deb told the outlet, adding, “We’re very, very stressed.”

According to SFGate, the Tahoe resort — which is owned by tech billionaire and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison — had been planning the renovations for years but the project kept getting delayed, until the December announcement that work would finally resume.
But despite being in touch with Hyatt's event staff on a weekly basis as they arranged their wedding, Deb and Gupta say they were given "not even a hint" that hotel construction could disrupt their event.
Another person whose wedding was canceled by the hotel took to Reddit seeking advice about their next steps. In a post in the "BigBudgetBrides" forum, they described the disappointing situation and wrote, "I imagine others are also impacted."
They asked, "What are you experiencing? What backup plans are you making? What amount of $ are you getting from the Hyatt?" and soon found several people "in the same boat" to commiserate with.
"Mine is canceled too," someone wrote. "I’m absolutely devastated and sobbed through the entire phone call. I’m sure you’re equally hurting, I’m so sorry we have to go through this. It absolutely sucks."
Another commented: "It is a mess and I can’t believe ethically the Hyatt isn’t pushing back on postponing the work. There has to be 50+ events impacted at minimum."
As for Deb and Gupta, they have since found a new venue in San Diego and changed their wedding date to give themselves an additional four months to pull together their event, per SFGate. Because everything is so last minute, the couple estimates they will be spending about 20% more than they originally planned to with their Tahoe wedding.
“Now that we’re in the throes of wedding planning, all these little things are coming up and it’s just gutting us,” Gupta told the outlet. “We’re going to have to spend an extra $5,000 here and an extra $10,000 here just to plug these holes.”
And, she added, “You have that feeling in your heart, and your throat, that this is not what you wanted."
