How Lorne Michaels Shut Down Taylor Swift's Plea To Scrap 'SNL' Sketch In 1 Fell Swoop
When it comes to what happens in Studio 8H, “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels always has the last laugh.
Apparently, superstar Taylor Swift learned that much while trying to get the veteran television producer to cut a sketch poking fun at her VIP “girl squad,” according to a profile of Michaels published by Vulture ahead of “SNL’s” 50th anniversary celebration on Sunday.
Back in 2015, the show reportedly reached out to ask Swift if she wanted to guest star in a skit suggesting her celebrity-packed clique was an apocalyptic cult.
Months earlier, the singer released a star-studded music video for her song “Bad Blood,” which featured famous friends Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, Karlie Kloss, Lena Dunham and Cara Delevigne, among others.
Not only did Swift decline the cameo, but she called Michaels directly to ask him to shelve the spoof.
Though the “SNL” kingpin was said to have “heard Swift out,” Michaels reportedly told the Grammy-winner, “Taylor, I do not negotiate with terrorists,” before nimbly grabbing a piece of popcorn, pitching a kernel in the air and catching it in his mouth.
After the sketch went on as planned, Swift made sure there were no hard feelings between her and the comedy legend.
The Monday after the broadcast, Michaels walked into his office to a bouquet of flowers from Swift. Attached was a note that said, “I hope there’s no bad blood.”
It didn’t seem like the bit left “Fortnight” singer with any animosity toward “SNL” in the end.
Swift has returned to the show as a musical guest three times since her reported tiff with Michaels happened almost a decade ago.
