Every couple has a unique love story to tell, and a personalised wedding veil offers a lovely way for brides to share theirs with the world. This trend, which has been gaining momentum in recent years, sees veils embroidered with words or motifs that hold special meaning.

“There has been a huge surge in brides wanting to add personal touches to their looks,” says Jenny King, who specialises in personalised embroidery at her namesake brand. While she also does hand embroidery on handkerchiefs, flower-girl pouches and napkins for the big day, personalised veils are becoming more and more popular.

“The most common requests we get are for wedding dates and initials, after that music lyrics are very popular, as are pets. Sometimes, brides may choose to include a symbol of a loved one who is no longer with them, or a significant flower or motif to be added. Anything is possible and it is such a joy to work on meaningful designs to make our brides’ wedding days as perfect as they can be.”

You may remember that Hailey Bieber’s Off-White look featured a veil that read ‘'Till Death Do Us Part’ which was a nod to the brand’s trademark tongue-in-cheek slogans (collections include shoes with the words ‘For Walking’ on and bags which say ‘Cash Inside’ on them) – but the effect gave a memorable personal touch to Bieber’s wedding look.

More recently, when Kourtney Kardashian married Travis Barker in Positano, she wore a Dolce & Gabbana veil with embroidery that was inspired by a tattoo Barker has of the Virgin Mary. The Duchess of Sussex, meanwhile, had a hidden meaning on her wedding veil too. Through a beautiful, embroidered design, Givenchy’s Clare Waight Keller represented the distinctive flora of each of the 53 Commonwealth countries on the veil, a nod to Prince Harry’s heritage and Meghan’s new role in the royal family.

Whether you are going big and bold or are choosing something more subtle with a hidden meaning, the options are truly endless for how to personal your wedding veil, King says. It is all about the look that you want to create.

“I think if you are going for a simple embroidered veil design then it will go with most dresses. If you want to go all out on your veil then it may be better to keep the dress simple as it is nice to have a balance, though everyone is different, anything goes and sometimes more is more. We can create any type of veil, to suit any dress style, if a bride wants a plain veil with a simple embroidered design or border, then we can do this, alternatively we can also produce a beautifully detailed embroidered veil.”

If you’re still on the hunt for ideas or want something truly bespoke, King recommends booking a veil appointment with her team at the Brighton studio and leaving at least a three-month lead time for your special creation. But, you can also choose a more straightforward option from her website, which should be ready for you in just five weeks.

“We have created a collection of three beautiful embroidered designs to suit three different bridal styles and themes, and each veil design can be personalised with whatever the bride and groom wish, such as initials, significant dates, love song lyrics and sentimental motifs.”
