Fans have been left devastated after the highly-anticipated Lizzie McGuire reboot has reportedly been put on hold.

According to Variety, creator of the show, Terri Minsky, has decided to step away from her showrunner role, with no replacement yet announced. The show is now said to be on hiatus.

“Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series,” a Disney spokesperson told Variety.

“After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show.”

Needless to say, fans who had initially thought their dreams had come true when the reboot was announced, have been left fuming online.

“Hey @disneyplus why are we having the Lizzie McGuire reboot on hold!! You can’t hype fans up for this just to not follow through!,” one person said.

“Lizzie McGuire is nothing without Terri Minsky. Can we not have any good things in this decade?,” another person tweeted.

In August, Disney announced they would be rebooting cult classic Lizzie McGuire for it’s streaming service Disney+, and Hilary Duff was in.

Hilary Duff confirms return on Instagram

The star confirmed the news in the best possible way, posting a montage of the series to her Instagram page, along with the announcement that Lizzie is back, baby.

“I’ve been trying to contain this excitement for a loooong time while this has been in the works!” the actress captioned the video.

“I am beyond excited to be home again, back with my girl... and into her 30’s.”

The actress also confirmed in a live appearance at Disney‘s D23 Expo that Lizzie is ‘all grown up’ in the reboot and has a much bigger shoe budget promising all kinds of looks from the fashion queen.

It may also be more a case of swapping the crimper for a curling wand, and butterfly clips for the latest incarnation of the trend, as Hilary will be playing Lizzie a decade or two later than we last saw her.

The series was supposed to follow a now-30-year-old Lizzie who is making her way in the hustle and bustle of New York city as an apprentice for a big-shot decorator.

Overwhelming excitement from fans

Fans took to social media to celebrate the gift we didn’t know we needed from the entertainment giant at the time.

“OH. MY. GOD. YES.” Meghan Trainor commented on Hilary’s announcement.

Other fans took to Twitter to celebrate the news.
