Emmys 2024 live: Aussie actress wins major award, The Bear and Baby Reindeer clean up

The 76th Emmy Awards are taking place live from Los Angeles, and Shogun and The Bear are the shows to beat.

We are live for the 76th Emmy Awards, taking place at Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Fans have been looking forward to seeing father-son duo Dan and Eugene Levy, Schitt's Creek stars, host the event. Shogun is the show to beat this year, with 25 nominations, but The Bear isn't far behind, with 23 nominations.

The Crown actress Elizabeth Debicki became the first Aussie to win Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her turn as Princess Diana in the hit Netflix show.

The Bear has continued to snap up awards, though, sadly, Ayo Edebiri lost to Hacks star Jean Smart for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and The Bear also lost to Hacks for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

Baby Reindeer also won big, winning Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series, Best Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Richard Gadd, Best Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Jessica Gunning.

On to the big awards! Hacks managed to take out Best Comedy Series, beating out The Bear once more, while Shogun won Best Drama Series, leaving fans very happy.

    Richard Gadd once again took to the stage after winning Best Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his performance in Baby Reindeer.

    "You're all crazy, honestly, thank you, thank you so much," Richard told the crowd, adding he wanted to thank his parents, who he forgot to thank earlier in the night for his first Emmy win.

    "They always said, 'Follow your heart, and the rest will fall into place,'" he said of his parents, offering viewers the same advice.

    Richard hoped that people would see his win as an inspiration and know that even when life is bad, it will always get better.

    Baby Reindeer's Jessica Gunning received a standing ovation for her win for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

    "My biggest thank has to go to Mr Richard Gadd, I've tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer means to me," she said, before joking she would sing it.

    "I will never ever forget her, or you, so thank you Reindeer," Jessica said of her character Martha, thanking Richard once more.

    Hacks star Jean Smart won the award for Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, beating out The Bear's Ayo Edebiri. Smart was the favourite to win the award and this is her sixth Emmy win.

    Many fans took to social media to share that they were sad to see Ayo be the first of The Bear cast to lose in their category:

    Elizabeth Debicki was the fan favourite to win Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and was left stunned when she took out the award. The star didn't write a speech, telling the audience she's superstitious and didn't want to ruin her chances. Just like a true princess, however, she spoke beautifully!

    Elizabeth's win marks the first time an Aussie actress has won in this category.

    Fans were not surprised to see The Bear's Jeremy Allen White win his second Emmy for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

    The star gave a sweet shout-out to his co-stars, saying, "I want us to be in each other's lives forever, I love you dearly."

    He also referenced the show's themes of mental health, saying, "Change is possible if you're able to reach out... you're never truly alone."

    However, some viewers were upset that other comedic actors had missed out on winning awards, with many believing the show's more serious tone is better suited to the Drama category.

    While we know Shogun and The Bear are the shows to beat this year, there are plenty of other heavy hitters. Only Murders in the Building, The Crown and Baby Reindeer are also favourites this year.

    Fans are hoping Baby Reindeer's Jessica Gunning will win Best Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as Martha in the show. Her co-star Nava Mau has made history as the first trans-Latina actress to be nominated in the category as well.

    Selena Gomez is nominated for the first time as an actress for her work in Only Murders in the Building. She will also be presenting an award tonight.

    Our very own Elizabeth Debicki is nominated for her turn as Princess Diana in The Crown and Naomi Watts is also nominated for Feud: Capote vs The Swans.

    Hacks is another favourite to win in the Comedy categories, with Jean Smart expected to take out the Best Lead Actress a Comedy Series – an upset for fans of The Bear's Ayo Edebiri, who's also nominated.

    Jodie Foster is expected to take out Best Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series for her work in True Detective: Night Country, the same category Naomi Watts is in.

  • Fun fact about the 2024 Emmys

    These are actually the second Emmys ceremony to be held this year after the SAG-AFTRA strike last year, which meant the 2023 show had to be pushed to January 2023. Despite the ceremony date change, the eligibility periods for both ceremonies remained the same, so today's ceremony is for shows released between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024.

    This means that shows like The Bear are being nominated for their second season, not the most recently released season three.

    Aussies wanting to watch the Emmys can tune in to watch them live from 10am on BINGE and Foxtel.

  • Shogun and The Bear lead Emmy nominations

    Shogun is the show to beat this year. It has already made history with 14 wins at the Creative Emmys and 25 nominations all up. The FX show has already made history with its 14 wins, the most ever for one drama series, and there are still plenty of awards up for grabs!

    The Bear isn't far behind with its own history-making 23 nominations, with Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss Bacharach looking likely to take out Best Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. The show has already won seven awards at the Creative Emmys – Jamie Lee Curtis won the Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress for her role as Donna Berzatto in the show.
