This $1.8 Million Fortress in the U.K. Lets You Live Out Your Own Game of ‘The Traitors’
It may not be the Scottish Highlands, but this castle in southwest England, about 200 miles outside of London, looks straight out of The Traitors. Following the season three premiere of Peacock’s cunning reality TV competition hosted by Alan Cumming, a majestic Grade II-listed fortress in the U.K. has hit the market—but will the next buyer be a faithful or a traitor?
On the market for £1.5 million (about $1.8 million) with Knight Frank, Tawstock Castle in North Devon dates to the 18th century. The turreted structure, perched high up on a hilltop and ringed by a ha-ha, a ditch-like recess in the land designed to keep livestock out of the castle gardens without compromising views, occupies more than eight sprawling acres, complete with fenced grounds, a private gated driveway, and 360-degree views of the picturesque Taw Valley.

Tawstock Castle was last up for sale in 2020 by owners Nigel Wilson and his partner Lorna Curwen, Country Life reported. According to the British magazine, the pair bought the spread in the mid-2000s after stumbling upon it while on vacation. “The property is so unique, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase something so special…I don’t think there’s anywhere like it,” Wilson told the publication.

The 300-year-old castle is of the motte-and-bailey variety, which means it sits on an artificial mound that’s surrounded by a ditch, and it retains many of its historical details. Most notably, you’ll find its castellated battlements—or exterior defensive walls—are still intact, as are the intricate corniced ceilings inside the home. Altogether, the baronial, stone-clad pad comprises four bedrooms and three bathrooms.
Past the castle’s entrance hall, the reception room is decked out with an ornate coffered ceiling and a stately fireplace with an Esse Dragon wood-burning stove. And for those with a penchant for Camelot and reality TV competition shows, there’s also a King Arthur roundtable where residents and guests can debate which suspected traitor should be banished next. Other fun spaces include an office, which is located within one of the turrets, a circular chef’s kitchen, a castellated rooftop terrace, and a lookout tower with bucolic countryside vistas.
“Tawstock Castle is more than just a home; it is a piece of heritage offering a unique lifestyle opportunity with ample parking and a helipad,” notes the listing. “The blend of historical grandeur with modern luxury, coupled with its stunning location, makes this property a truly rare find. For those seeking a distinctive and prestigious residence, Tawstock Castle stands unparalleled.”
