Lionsgate Pushes Mel Gibson’s ‘Flight Risk’ To 2025
Lionsgate has pushed the release date for Mel Gibson’s anticipated suspense thriller Flight Risk, starring Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace and Michelle Dockery, to 2025, the studio announced on Friday afternoon.
The film will now open wide on January 24, 2025, contending in its opening weekend with only the Disney-inspired indie horror comedy Screamboat and IFC Films’ thriller Inheritance starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans. The film’s previous frame of October 18, 2024 was a good deal busier — Paramount Pictures’ horror pic Smile 2, Neon’s Palme d’Or winner Anora from Sean Baker and Roadside Attractions’ drama Exhibiting Forgiveness being among the titles set to open then.

Based on the 2020 Black List script by Jared Rosenberg, Flight Risk follows a pilot (Wahlberg) transporting an Air Marshal (Dockery), who’s been tasked with accompanying a fugitive (Grace) to trial. As the trio crosses the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.
The project marks Gibson’s first outing behind the camera since the Academy Award-nominated war drama Hacksaw Ridge for the same studio. Davis Entertainment produced alongside Gibson and Bruce Davey through their Icon Productions, as well as Alex Lebovici’s Hammerstone Studios.
Coming off of the release of its reboot of The Crow, crime comedy Greedy People, heist thriller 1992 and mental health drama Continue, Lionsgate will next open its Dave Bautista action comedy The Killer’s Game on September 13. The rest of the year will also see the studio release horror pics Bagman & Never Let Go (September 20), thriller Amber Alert (September 27) starring Hayden Panetierre and Tyler James Williams, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis (September 27), the period drama White Bird (October 4), and holiday family comedy The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (November 8).
