Oscars 2024: Fans spot 'hidden detail' in Margot Robbie's dress after Barbie snub

She brought pink to pretty much every red carpet throughout Barbie's promotional trail, but Margot Robbie surprised fans at the 2024 Oscars on Monday when she instead wore black.

The Australian actress attended the award ceremony in a strapless chainmail gown from Versace, which some fans have interpreted as a “funeral outfit” to send off the record-breaking film at the final event of this year's awards season.

“Margot Robbie has forsaken pink for gleaming black strapless no jewellery - she's buried Barbie and tonight is the festive funeral,” one person wrote.

“She just buried Barbiecore,” another added, with someone else suggesting Margot is “officially declaring the end of her Barbie era”.

“Margot Robbie wearing pink all 2023 to promote Barbie only to show up to the Oscars wearing black is such a damn move,” a fourth shared, while another agreed, “It feels like the death of the Barbie press tour for her”.

Some fans predicted that Margot opted to wear black to let her co-star, America Ferrera, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress, stand out in pink.

“Margot and America traded places. Love how America wore the flashier look and colour,” a fan commented.

Meanwhile, others have questioned whether Margot’s outfit choice was a “protest” to both herself and Barbie’s director Greta Gerwig being snubbed.

“I think this dress is a protest against the Academy… all black, no accessories, hair and make up very neutral,” one user shared, while another replied, “Black because she was snubbed. Take a stand girlllll! Don’t give them what they want!”.

“Barbie is in grief for her non-nomination,” someone else said, followed by a different user who commented, “Black for death of her nomination!”.

“Margot Robbie must be pretty pissed that Ken got a nom and her director didn’t. Barbie saved cinema this last year. Don’t blame her for wearing black,” one fan wrote.

Margot speaks out about Oscars snub

Barbie received eight Academy Award nominations this year, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Original Song for both ‘I’m Just Ken’ and ‘What Was I Made For?’.

During a Q&A hosted by the Academy Museum last month, Margot broke her silence after she and director Greta Gerwig both missed out on Oscar nominations.

“Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films,” she said.

Margot didn't address her own snub but added the whole team was “beyond ecstatic” that the movie received eight Oscar nominations.

“We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact. And it’s already done that, and some, like way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this,” she said.

“I'm so, so obviously ecstatic. Everyone getting the nods that they have is incredible and the Best Picture nod.”
