“Legends of Tomorrow” costars Courtney Ford and Brandon Routh divorce after 17 years of marriage
"It feels ridiculous to post this statement with fires still raging, but an online publication announced our news before we could."
Courtney Ford and Brandon Routh are separating after 17 years of marriage.
Ford, known for her roles on Dexter and True Blood, filed for divorce from Routh, also an actor who starred in Superman Returns and Arrow, in Los Angeles on Wednesday, citing irreconcilable differences, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.
The couple shared a joint statement about the separation Thursday on social media, writing that it "feels ridiculous to post this statement" as several wildfires continue to devastate Los Angeles, "but an online publication announced our news before we could."
Ford and Routh wrote that they've decided to "begin a new journey, and enter this next chapter of life as friends and co-parents." The statement continued, "We are now and forever rooting for each other as we move through this wild adventure called life. Our son is, and will always be, our highest priority, and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate this transition."

The couple also said that while they had to evacuate their homes amid the fires, they are safe "but in shock and grief for our friends who have lost their homes and businesses. Our hearts break for our community devastated by the ongoing fires. We love you Los Angeles."
Ford and Routh wed in November 2007 after four years of dating and share one son, Leo, 12, together. Though both in show business, they did not actually meet on a set. Speaking with PEOPLE at the 2006 Golden Globes, Routh said he met his future wife while he was a bartender at a bowling alley, of all places, wherein Ford's brother held his wedding rehearsal dinner party. "He met my whole family the day he met me," quipped Ford.

Ford played Christine Hill on Dexter and Portia Bellefleur on True Blood; other credits include Supernatural, Parenthood, and Murder in the First. Routh played Superman himself in Superman Returns, and has also appeared in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Chuck, and The Rookie. Forth and Routh also notably shared the screen on DC's Legends of Tomorrow on the CW, overlapping between seasons 3 and 5 before both leaving the show.
"Getting to work together, the two of us, and do the comedy and play off each other has been really amazing and just keeps building and building," Routh told PEOPLE of working with Ford in 2019.
