Lady Gaga's $40 million Oscars necklace was last worn by Audrey Hepburn
She’s nominated for the Best Actress award at tonight’s Oscars and Lady Gaga made sure all eyes were on her when she arrived on the red carpet.
The 32-year-old A Star Is Born actress stunned in a black, strapless Alexander McQueen gown, which she teamed with a pair of full-length black gloves.
However, it was Gaga’s shimmering, $40 million (US$30 million) Tiffany & Co. diamond necklace that caught everyone’s attention, and it turns out she’s one of only three women to ever wear it.
The last person to don the bling was in fact Breakfast at Tiffany’s star Audrey Hepburn, in 1961.
The stunning yellow diamond, which comes in at a whopping 128.54 carats, was discovered in South Africa in 1877 by Tiffany founder Charles Lewis Tiffany.
According to Vogue, it was first worn by socialite Mrs. Mary Whitehouse in 1957 for the Tiffany Ball but was elevated to star status when Audrey Hepburn donned it in 1961 for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s press tour.
“Lady Gaga is the ultimate creator, innovator and rule breaker, and I’m thrilled that she will be wearing the legendary Tiffany Diamond on the awards show red carpet for the first time since it was discovered 141 years ago,” Reed Krakoff, Tiffany & Co chief artistic officer, said in a statement published by People.
The necklace the yellow diamond is set in also features 80 carats of cushion-cut diamond and 15 carats of round brilliant stones.
