Theories began with a trailer released in June 2024: Thirty seconds in, the clip showcased a pair of legs in a suit strikingly similar to that of Deadpool’s, as the titular character, played by Ryan Reynolds, says in a voiceover: "I’m about to lose everything that I’ve ever cared about.”

In the final trailer, released ahead of the film's premiere on July 26, 2024, the mysterious figure is shown to have blonde hair and is wearing a red and black suit matching that of Deadpool's, intensifying the rumors that this could be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s debut of the character.

The possibility of Blake Lively, Reynolds' wife, playing Lady Deadpool became a point of discussion after the leg and blonde hair reveals, which has only given fans more reason to suspect the Gossip Girl alum is assuming the role.

In a joint Instagram post in July 2024, Lively is shown kissing Reynolds in his full Deadpool costume, while she dons an unmistakably all-red outfit, perpetuating rumors further. A few days later, the actress confirmed that she is, in fact, playing the new character, revealing the story behind the film on Instagram.

Lady Deadpool’s real name is Wanda Wilson. In her universe, she becomes the bodyguard of a man named Charles Randolph Fey and eventually joins the anti-government forces after his death.

Who is playing Lady Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Lively, who has been married to Reynolds since 2012, plays Lady Deadpool.

On the day of the film's premiere, The Age of Adaline star opened up about how Lady Deadpool arrived on the big screen.

"In 2010 I was on Gossip Girl and about to film my first superhero movie, The Green Lantern with my kind Canadian costar @vancityreynolds," Lively wrote on Instagram alongside a gallery of photos.

According to the actress, Reynolds told her about the plot of Deadpool but they settled on the fact that the project might not come to fruition. Fast forward, Deadpool hit theaters in 2016 followed by Deadpool 2 in 2018 and Lively was eventually cast in its third installment in 2024.

"The universe has such a magical sense of humor sometimes," she added, before signing her post with "Xoxo -LP 💋," a reference to her Gossip Girl roots and Lady Deadpool.

How does Lady Deadpool fit in the MCU timeline?

Lady Deadpool's introduction into the MCU further expands the multiverse developed in recent Marvel projects.

Deadpool & Wolverine picks up years after the events of Deadpool 2, with Wade now encountering the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an organization introduced in the Disney+ series Loki.

The crossover of TVA is one of the many instances of multiverse integration by MCU in recent years — mainly due to the 2019 acquisition of Fox by Disney, which brought the rights to characters like Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU, allowing the studio to utilize characters beyond their typical limitations. However, complex legalities delayed their integration until recently, per Entertainment Weekly.

"The notion that, all these years later, we're in a world where [Jackman] is Wolverine, and Deadpool and all of those X-Men characters are together under the same roof, is a pretty amazing quarter-of-a-century experience," Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige told the outlet.
